My M Steering Wheel Upgrade

Hi All

Thought i'd share details of how my steering wheel upgrade went the other weekend.

Took about 1.5 hours including waiting 30 mins after disconnecting the battery, and took my time as I didn't want to do a rush job.
I did end up punching myself in the nose full pelt whilst trying to undo the main nut for the old wheel! :headbang:

Really cannot believe the difference it has made, I fell in love with the car again after taking her for a spin after fitting. So much thicker and grippier than the standard wheel.

A relatively easy upgrade that I would highly recommend!

Cheers

Nice one, it's amazing that they're so similar in appearance yet feel so different. IMO the steering wheel is one of the most important parts of the car, that's why I had to have a facelift one in my old 5 series and could never have lived with the bus wheel in the 8 series despite how cool the cars look.

No I bought it 2nd hand for £150

But gave it a good clean with Autoglym leather cleaner followed by 2 coats of Autoglym leather balm.

Came up as good as new!

Yep well done I thought it was new

Looks brand new ! Brilliant upgrade, I love the feel of mine.

@aquazi - adding the buttons would add about £200 to the cost though, as they're really expensive and you'd also need different side trims and the loom...

I bought my car with an M wheel already fitted, so never realised just how much thicker it is than a standard wheel.

That side by side shot shows it perfectly. It's a huge difference!

Indeed this is the reason I didn't bother with buttons. This wheel came up at a fair price, and I wasn't going to go and spend a few hundred quid on some buttons. Else I may as well have spent £400+ on a brand new MFSW from Bmw which I couldn't bring myself to do.

So value for money wise this was my compromise, and I would say its really made a big difference to the feel of the car when driving.

Nice work, Dan. I've fitted buttons to mine now, but I do miss how clean the original looks. It compliments the focused nature of the cabin really well.

New sofa looks good too. ;)

What i had no idea!

Prob cheaper to get a second hand silver controls off the non m wheel and fit them.

I think you need to trim the spoke covers for the non-M buttons and (optionally) paint them black before fitting to an M wheel.

Does anyone know, Do only Z4 specific Msport steering wheels fit? or can you use for example a 1 or 3 series wheel? the standard one in my E85 needs changing but I'm struggling to find one at a reasonable price.
