My keys are playing up?

Hi all

I am struggling with my key, it seems to be going flat and stop working, have reprogrammed a couple of times and it works but in a couple of days nothing, can there batteries be replaced? Is it a dealer job?

I think they are sealed units, I also have an issue with one of my keys at the moment. The batteries are rechargeable when they are in the ignition, but like all batteries they can stop holding charge.

I've gotta go on a long drive tomorrow so I'm hoping it will charge on the run, if not ill have to look into a new key I guess.

Russ, where are you getting your re-programme method from?

Are you doing lots of short trips? If so that can just be the key not getting enough charge. Alternatively, at 10 or so years old, I guess a lot of batteries will start to fade.

From what I've been told a new key is approx £130.

Its rare for the batteries to go, but it did happen on my X5 with one key after nearly a decalde. You can cut the key open and solder in a new battery and then either get a new case from ebay or reseal the original.

Before I did it though I'd want to check the spare key and if that is the same, have it on a longer run, ensure the reprogramming is correct, etc.

Expect something like this inside:

I went for an hour long drive today with the key that's not working and still no good, dead. I guess it's had it, the only saving grace is that the girl I bought the car from is due to send me a 3rd key which hopefully works.

As said above new key is £140 and coding is another £80. You can get a new blank on ebay which needs to be cut (£5-£10) and then coded.

I have found that if I recode the "dead" key it works fine but the other key will stop working, then I found that if I recoded both keys they now seem to work ok...

That's right. Any time one does an initialisation procedure, it must be done for all keys. The transmitters use a rolling code security scheme. Initialising the keys matches up the rolling codes in both the keys and the car. Any key left out of the process will be transmitting rolling codes out of synch with the car, meaning the car will ignore the key's signals.

Right I've got my fob working again. I had the same problem as you, when one fob is working the other one doesn't. If you haven't seen this already then click the link and follow Method 2....

Both fobs working now.

sorry for reviving an old thread, but i found this very useful after a bit of searching. My central locking stopped working when the battery packed in during the recent cold snap: method 3 worked for me :) TFFT!!

Copied link contents here just in case the source dies with a little edit because the bullets were inconsistent formats and had fullstops applied inconsistently at the end (that sort of stuff messes with my head): Yes, I can be a lot of fun to work with!!!

Method 1:
1. Working from within the vehicle and with the doors shut
2. Turn ignition to position 1 and back to off within 5 seconds
3. Remove the key from ignition and press and hold the unlock button for 15 seconds during this time press the key lock button 3 times within 5 seconds
4. Release both buttons
5. Doors will lock and unlock to show correct programming has occurred

Method 2:
To do this procedure you need to have one working key and one key that needs to be programmed.
1. Get in and close all doors
2. Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds
3. Remove the 1st key
4. Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote receiver antenna
5. Hold down the unlock button and press the lock button 3 times. Release the unlock button and the doors lock which confirms the operation
6. Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc
If it does not work, try doing the keys in opposite order. Key 2 then key 1, vs 1 then 2.

Method 3:
Alternate if you do not have a working remote
1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly
2. Remove key
3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button
4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds
5. Turn on ignition to finalise

PLEASE NOTE: This programming procedure programs the remote control part of the key. Any transponder chip for the immobiliser (starting of car) will not be programmed and must be done by a specialist.
