My Journey Begins!

[ref]JonLeeper[/ref], I'm keeping an eye on your progress!
Quick comment. My headlights kept steaming up despite drying them up time after time. The problem is invariably their rubber gasket in the back cover. Once removed it will never seal again properly. Eventually I resolved the problem by putting a strip of gaffer tape bridging over from the top of the headlight unit to the top of the bodywork. You can barely see it and what it does is allow for rain water that otherwise would go been to the seal to wash over the gaffer tape instead and never reach the back of the headlight unit. problem solved!

Try a thin film of lithium grease, the stuff you put on MTB chains

[ref]Jembo[/ref], i did. I tried all sorts. I think that the problem is that after uears of the back cover being in place the soft rubber seal gets indented with a groove of where it was pressed against. By removing and refitting the seal never end up in the same position as it spent the previous so many years, so it lets the moisture in.

I don’t know what they cost now, but new rear covers from BMW were £5 a side when I replaced them. A good few years ago now though.

You can also just pull the seal out and turn it over to the unmarked side as a cheap fix.

I’m STILL doing my lights as various other things have taken up my time as of late but am hoping to get them finished very soon!

Here’s what my table looked like  :fuelfire:

Jingle,

Just a quick question, if.i may. How did you rig up the test wiring? I'll want to test mine before I take them back to the detailers.

Many thanks Jon

I was asking lots of questions to IamOrion as he helped me loads. But basically used a 12v power supply and wired up the negatives to the same pin, and the various positives where needed (they are switch backs so I didn’t bother wiring up the indicator positive for the time being)

Even after all the testing once I’ve got everything ready I’m gonna test on the car before I seal them back up and get the lenses coated etc.

Feel free to ask any other questions if needed

That hardtop looks nice 8)
I trust you didn't have any wind-noise issues but if you did give me a shout. I'll tell you how to adjust it :)
Hmmm, any chance you could advise me about this problem - I fitted a hard top last year and I'm getting wind noise from the passenger side...

Take a look at this, you need to adjust the passenger side bolt so that the gap is reduced, make sure you unlock the mechanism first, then adjust it and then lock it again. If you adjust it till you've got the 5mm and then you lock it (the whole thing will come down and lock in place) then you'll be way less than the 5mm and maybe hardtop will touch the car... I hope that makes sense?

Anyway take a look and let me know if you need anything else...

I've no idea if it is of any help to anyone here but I have a set of old and tatty 'sonar' projector headlights. In my opinion they're good as a product but as many did mine suffered bad water ingress and the reflective silver backing has gone black in places.

Perfectly serviceable (I only removed to replace with another set of new sonar ones on my old si)
They're taking up space and about to go to the tip so if anyone does want them for free shout up

Sorry for the plug on your thread Jon - was thinking you might be able to have a look at the wiring on these and or the projector units that's all :)

Oooohhhh go on! Fit it already! :poke:
Itd be good if ypu could post a picture of the lights, one upgraded, one not.

I'm trying! My dining room table is just covered in bits of headlight! I'm doing both at the same time, but I do still have my e85 with standard old projectors so was going to park them side by side and see what the difference is, when I'm finished! I'm also taking lots of pictures so can do a "How To" if anyone is interested.

[ref]JonLeeper[/ref], you are officially today's winner of the 'hero of the day' award

Really looking forward to seeing yhe final result and your 'How-to'. :driving:

They look a LOT nicer than the gold paint job I had on them!! Very smart dude 8)
