My first Z4? (Hopefully!)

After losing out on the car sold to my local dealership from a forum member about a month ago, another has come up.

Misano blue, tan interior and all the packs except driver assist. Registered 2021 with 35k miles.

I’d be driving up a fair way to check it out and it’s been a while since I’ve gone through the process. Any advice on what dealerships might try and offer and what’s worth going for? Eg additional warranties, tyre protect packages etc.

Are there any additional touches people have haggled into their used car deals?

It has been a long time since I bought an AUC BMW but the dealer tried to get me to take all sorts of stuff I didn't need. :(

I resisted the tyre cover as if I only had one puncture it would be cheaper to just buy a new tyre!

But I did get conned into taking GAP Insurance. I later realised I was basically insuring against depreciation which happens anyway, and would need to total the car to claim. An expensive mistake.

I think there was a policy for wheel damage and maybe something else but I declined those too.

What I did want was a Service Pack but I couldn't get that thrown in. All I got was a set of mats and half a tank of fuel - Cooper of Croydon were generally hopeless.

I bought a 5 year Service Pack later.

Anyway I hope you can get a good deal.

Just get the price as low as you can or as much as you can for your trade in. All the rest is just a distraction.
I disagree about gap insurance. My product is a return to invoice and with car thefts what they are……..
Also it covers me for £500 excess on any insurance claim so I’ve upped my excess of my car to get a better price.

Gap may be more worthwhile now, but in 2008 I couldn't see a 123d being a thief magnet!

Thanks for all the replies. What are people’s thoughts on warranties? I’m not sure what BMW offer but would love some peace of mind!

I have the BMW comprehensive warranty on my car. I think I paid under £400 year for it last year. Just buys a bit of peace of mind against major mechanical or electrical failures.

Is this something all dealers offer? Will be good to know before I go in to negotiate a deal!

I buy mine through the BMW Warranty site https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/. You can get an immediate quote there. It is all linked in through the BMW dealer systems, so when you book it in for any work they'll know about your warranty.

Good to know - I guess I’ll find out if the car has any cover or warranty once I buy it. I know some dealers give you a year when you buy approved used, then can look at their comp warranty when that’s due to run out.

Watch out for dealers selling their own 3 yr warranty, it’s not the BMW comprehensive warranty that covers everything, read the small print carefully, alloys on a Z4 are very vulnerable to damage, alloy wheel insurance will probably pay back.

Exactly the kind of advice I’m looking for. Thank you! Seems like there’s no need to get talked into a warranty on the day of sale if this is something I can do outside of the dealership.

Oh no! The cover is excellent value. I’ve got 5 per year for 3 years - it is a bit of a no brainer depending on the amount you drive it and where. Definitely for me being London based.

Out of interest, what did you end up paying for the actual car (before any warranties, extras) ?

I'm literally about to buy a 2021 with 35,000 miles & have been offered the alloy wheel, tyre damage & scratch/dent insurances.
They are about £400 each for 3-years coverage of each, so possibly value?

Also, when I go to test drive this car & have a good look at it, are there any specific things I should look for, maybe known issues with this car etc..? :o

I'm trying to cover myself so no surprises down the line, although it comes with a 1-year official BMW used car warranty which is supposed to be pretty comprehensive????

Unless you plan to kerb wheels and wreck tyres you might as well just save your money IMHO!

I had 4 wheels for my MC acid-dipped and powder-coated for £288 in April 2021 and they still look fine 4 years later. Had them fitted with new tyres that are also fine, apart from some wear.

I'd want a lot more detail of what scratch/dent cover provided, but being cynical I suspect there will be plenty of exclusions!

£1,200 buys a lot of petrol. :D

The first one was 32,750 and this one with 10k less miles than the last is 32,990. I’ve gone part finance to get all the extra protections included and to top up the 1 year warranty to 3 years. The extra is worth the peace of mind IMO!

From the research I’ve done on it before checking mine out, quite reassuringly there wasn’t too much to check. Lipping on the brake discs was the main thing I saw mentioned but this is something you’d check on all cars of this age, not Z4 specific. Obviously check the roof operation and that it functions as expected. General electrical checks - do heated seats and wheel etc all work as expected.

Can you please tell me exactly where the VIN number should be found on this car?

I'm assuming the drivers door sill, the front windscreen somewhere & somewhere in the engine bay?
