My first Z! (UPDATED WITH PICTURES)

Hello everyone, I just took delivery of my first Z today. I purchased a 2007 Si, it's been babied and only has 16800 miles (or 27k kilometers for your Brits). It's quite a bit of an upgrade for me as I traded in my 2000 VW Golf for it and no one in my family has ever driven a BMW let alone a Z. I'm really excited to learn and share stories on the forum and look forward to good conversation.

I didn't have a chance to take any pictures today but I plan on taking her out tomorrow and doing a photo op....(I'm a bit of an amateur photographer, here's an op I did with a coworker's 63 Impala http://tinyurl.com/2votc26) So hopefully I have some quality pictures to share. I live in Huntsville Alabama and it's been over 100 degrees here and I can't wait for fall to come.

One question, how pretentious is it to name your Z? I figure any other car it might be but she just screamed "Name me."

Cheers and beers everyone!

Welcome! If the pics of the Impala are anything to go by, I'm really looking forward to seeing how you capture your Z4! :)

Just to note, us brits also measure our distance primarily in miles, it's the rest of Europe that do km... not really a problem when driving as the speedometers here have both scales and 100 km = 62 miles (which I shorten down to 60 anyway) - I've been to Michigan a few times, I think the visiting canadians have the same on their cars, but most of the US models are in MPH only...

Enjoy your new Z4, I just joined the club last week, having fun so far! Although I'm sure your roof will be down more often with the weather in Alabama! :)

hi and welcome, cheers and beers back to you, i like that expression :)

look forward to the pics

Dang that's twice I've been made a fool of with you Brits and measurements the other was with feet vs metres. I suppose I can assign the blame to the time I've spent in Germany hah!

@Gannet> Thank you and thank you I feel privileged to be driving such a sexy car. Well the first name that came to mind was Ziva, obviously had to have a Zed name....but no it doesn't refer to the character from NCIS :)

@Dev> Thanks for the kind words, I've been browsing the forums and have seen some photography that I could only hope to aspire to do but I enjoy trying to get some different types of shots, hopefully I can find a nice place around tomorrow and do a walk around. My speedometer has MPH on the outer side and KPH on the inner side. I've never driven in the UK, but have in both Canada and Germany and wrongly supposed the UK was the same. When will I ever learn? :oops: and thanks for the welcome!

@srhutch> Thanks much!

And seeing as how this forum is populate by a lot of Brits, do we have a part of the forum to discuss footy? I've been a die-hard United fan for over 12 years now (queue the "glory hunter" comments :lol: )

@Taz: I think I picked that phrase up from a friend who lives in Middlesbrough and it kind of stuck. Thanks for the welcome!

quote: "I've been a die-hard United fan for over 12 years now"

:tumbleweed:

sorry, couldn't resist! :)

@Taz: Spread the phrase! Cheers and beers! Doesn't get any better than that!

@Dev: Hahaha I know I know I know....*removed mindless dribble*

Cheers and beers everyone!

@paddy : Thanks!

So as promised I went out and tried a photo-op. Unfortunately it was clear blue skies and quite bright so I had a lot of "blown" out sky, but I did salvage about 7 pictures. I'm hoping to go out tomorrow again and hopefully get some better results.

Hello, Fellow Alabamian -

I bought my first Z4 just last month. I've been lurking here ever since. Your question about naming you Z prompted me to join an post this reply.

I haven't been able to keep from naming my car. My girlfriend makes fun of me and tries to shoot down every name I come up with, but I've settled on a name. Since buying the car, I've been searching for and watching any reviews or video on Z4's I can find on the web (primarily YouTube.com). Most of the video found (or at least the most entertaining) are old Top Gear episodes. On these shows and other reviews originating from England they always refer to the Z as "Zed-4". This was completely new to me. I never realized that "Z" was pronounced "Zed" in the UK.

So, my car is officially "Zed". I wanted to give it a woman's name (flirted with Zelda for a while), but thanks to references here and Top Gear, my Z is "Zed". Oddly enough, I don't have any good pictures of her. Just a few iPhone shots taken when I dropped it off at the local independent BMW mechanic here in Birmingham, Al. I won't bother posting those, but I will try and paste a link to the Ebay auction that led me to the car. The dealership selling the car was a little less than honest, but that is a story for another time.

Congrats you your Z. I'd never driven a sports car before and never been in a convertible with the top down. This is a bucket list item for me. I'm happy to say that I don't regret that I made the purchase.

Cheers!

Ranier, why would you want to give your car a womans name lol

chillmike, excellent shot - cheers and beers hehe

@Dr.Nick: HI DR. NICK!!!! Thanks for the compliments!

@Ranier: Congrats on your buy as well, it's a great feeling isn't it? This was on my bucket list as well. I'm 28 and this is my third vehicle, went from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, to a 4 door VW Golf to this car and I could not be more happy with it. I NEVER thought I'd be driving a beamer let alone a Z so I share your enthusiasm.
I'm right there with you I wasn't aware of "zed" until I watched Shaun of the Dead when Shaun says "Don' say the Zed word"...hahaha. I was between Zooey and Ziva, Zooey after my crush on Zooey Deschanel and Ziva cause it's a bit uncommon and that VAH sound of the car hehehe :) Seeing that you got that in Naples I'm guessing you're down in south Alabama?

@Taz: Thanks for the kind words. I believe it to be an American thing to name your car after a woman. I would think it started somewhere in the 50s. It's either a female name or a name like "Carmageddon" that isn't female or male.

And again,

Cheers and Beers everyone!

Hell,and welcome to the forum :D
Nice pics/car too :thumbsup:

Ziva seems a very good/apt name also (even if it is taken from the ncis character,lol :poke: ) :rofl:

great pics, the car looks fantastic, lovely colour!

@chillmike - yup, arsenal... :P (you didn't have to edit that out!)

looking at your pics I just remembered, one of the cool things about cars in the states is that you don't need to have a front numberplate... :)

is that true for most/all states?

Sweet ride chillmike; and great shots.

"Cheers and beers!" - this HAS to be a standard forum phrase now! :thumbsup:

@Craig: Thanks for the kind words. It's funny when I was looking at Z names I thought ooh Ziva I like that and then thought where have I heard that before? Oh yeah the hot Israeli/Chilean chick from NCIS :)

@Dev: Yeah just felt like needless dribble so I edited out haha. A gooner fan eh? I suppose I can forgive that :poke: We've already won our first "trophy" this year :evil: As for the plates, it varies from state to state, most of the states I've lived in don't require them but there are quite a few that do and what sucks is if you bought your car in a no front plate state it most likely doesn't have a place for one and if you move to a state that requires them, they like you to bolt the plate through the car eeeegad.

@inkey$: Thanks for the kind words! I wouldn't mind if the forum adopted it :)

This car is just so much fun to drive, there's nothing better than just blowing by some dumb redneck on the highway :lol:

Cheers and Beers everyone!
