My first journey into Z4 - thoughts/buying tips welcome

Hi All

Looking to get myself a Z4 as a Sunday run around. The more I look at available options the more I tie myself in knots.
Should I go for a newer model, 20i / 28i (or just focus on the 20i and get it remapped if I feel the need). Or do I go older and look for a 23i? There appear to be some good low mileage options on the 20i on Autotrader, ranging from £12k to £16k (2011, 2015 respectively)
Does it really need the idrive (I have it in my other car so used to it, but have seen you can add aftermarket apple CarPlay).
I am based in south east London so didn’t really want to travel to ends of the UK to look one if I can avoid it. Just want to make sure I don’t end up with a turkey.
Apologies for the brain fart on a page.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Maybe it depends whether you have a preference for an N/A straight 6 or a 4 cylinder turbo?

The straight 6 engines do seem pretty bullet-proof, although over time ancillaries like alternators, starters, water pumps, etc. will die.

Same is probably true of the 4 cylinder turbo models, but some of them can also have issues with the cam-chain tensioner. It seems the 18i, 20i and 28i all have the same engine, so with a remap they can all make a bit more than 28i power, although the 28i does have bigger front brakes.

I can't help with the i-drive as I've never had it, but I know people have found after-market solutions for music.

Good luck finding the right one!
