My first go at claying

I’ve never done it before but today I decided to give claying a go. If you haven’t done it before you might find this useful.

Do I need to clay? I did the plastic bag over your hand test, rub the car with your hand in a bag after the car has been cleaned if its bumpy then that is the muck on the paint and therefore its worth claying it.

What do you actually do? To be honest I had no idea what it involved when I set out to buy the clay from Halfords, I didn’t know what you actually did with it. All you do is spray on the lubricant which then allows you to rub the clay across the paintwork. With a bit of work much like polishing, the clay then lifts all the muck off the car. You need the clay every so often to get a clean face to it. Once you’ve done a panel wipe it dry with a microfibre cloth. After that the car will need a polish.

What did I get? I went for the Meguiars kit as it came with a microfibre cloth and I needed one of them anyway, the lubricant was the Meguiars detailer which was a nice to have for the future and also a small sample of polish came with it as well - it cost £24.99. It has two clay bars in the kit 50g each. I used one for the whole car so have another for next time.

Is claying worth it? Definitely; the difference is very visible especially as the car is silver and shows up any tar spots. I have used tar remover before and it takes an age to do what this did very quickly.

looking good

Will probably have a go at this next weekend.. I spent the today doing my roof cleaning/treatment and my wheels so big clean next week :)

Nice finish. I have never given claying a go. Is there a possibility that it could go horribly wrong ??

Yes if you drop the clay and think 'ah it'll be OK, I picked the grit off it'

Seriously though I tried this for the first time a couple of years back and if you do it without pressure keep the surface luricated then all it's going is gliding over the surface and picking stuck on dirt and contaminents off.

BTW - Looks good Rob

I used the same kit a few months ago and done it once since. I always wash the car after claying before re-applying the polish/wax.

Looking good.

I did mine the other week. used the same kit and then done the three step clean polish wax.

il put some pics up when i get the chance to get them off the camera.

looking good!

Tried claying once and found it not to make much difference at all... maybe my standards are lower or maybe I was doing it wrong but a good was is good enough for me.. not like people will get close enough to see the difference most of the time anyway, and if they did they would be more focused on the kerbed alloys LOL

I clay my car at least every three to six months. Usually closer to six months. Then a full detail...

Of course if I am changing the type of sealer and wax, I will do a clay also, then a IPA then the new sealer and then wax.

I just picked up some Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0 (DGPS) and some new DP Max Wax. When I finally get home from travel in Dec, I will be cleaning everything off and starting with the new stuff..
