My First BMW, and not a good experience

I have had my 2004 Z4 for two weeks now. In that time the fuel gauge has mis-read (which I believe is a common problem), and two coil packs have failed!
Is this the sort of quality I can expect, or am I just unlucky?

er.. welcome to the forum :)

I also have a 2004 Z4 not had those two problems, on the whole been fine apart from a new clutch and suspension spring and radio... oh dear maybes im unlucky too :tumbleweed:

Welcome nevans :)

Honestly, I think you've been unlucky! I had my old E36 right up to 150,000 miles and only ever had 2 problems with it (bearing in the water pump went kablooey and a teeny little sensor packed up).

My Zed's been hassle free so far. Mind I've only had it a week so touch wood :)

I will add though that my dealer has sorted everything first time without fuss :)

had my car 1.25 years....

nevans, welcome to the forum...
I'm on my 2nd Zed and have had no problems worth mentioning... :)

Hi and welcome.

Sounds unlucky to me as these cars seem pretty bullet proof. I've run a 2003 for close to a a year and cannot recall a single fault other than the odd rattle and picky thing.

If you purchased private you probably saved it in the price paid, if from a dealer hopefully he picked up the tab.

I figure as long as they fix it without any problems and give me a loaner while they do I can live with most any problem. Especially under warranty.

2.5 2003 and put over 1200 miles on it in the lat 4 weeks - no probLems so far and it just about to rack 50,000 miles,,,BUT as the guy who jumped out withoutout a parachute... so far so good!

I understand your frustration, sorry to hear you have had these problems but I don't believe it is "common". It does sound like the issues that happened with the TT's a few years ago... odd.

What do you mean the fuel gauge is inaccurate? The yellow light comes on early but aside from that it's not too bad. Do you mean the dial or the computer? (the computers on all cars are a little bit random, especially when it gets to the end of the tank)

Dealer sorted all mine except the bust spring - cos that one was out of warranty, still thought the price charged then was reasonable.

overall Im satisfied :)

Hi. I've had a 2005 E46 330xi, a 2006 E53 X5 4.4i, currently have a 2007 E70 X5 4.8i and will receive in March a 2008 Z4MC. So far, I've had O2 sensors replaced on all three cars. Other than that, they have been running flawlessly. Mind you I did not keep them for very long.

I think you've been unlucky. Good luck.

Faulty coils a known problem mid 2003 - early 2004.
BMW issued a warranty advisory saying to replace all 6 "Bremi" types
in one go, but "Bosch" manufactured ones individually.
I had 2 go separately last year (Bremi). I then replaced the remaining 4.
(I purchased from the dealer, but did the work myself).
Car was out of warranty, but I wrote to BMW UK who gave me £100 credit at
dealer as goodwill.
:D

Thanks for the replies guys. The car was under waranty, and was fixed in a day! Let's hope it stays fixed.
The fuel guage problem has cleared itself. After filling the tank it only registered about 1/4 full, but gradually (over days) crept up to the correct level.

P.S. Loving the driving experience

Had a similar problem with the fuel tank on one of my old E46's. Hapeened half a dzen times in two years, didnto bother to try and dealer to fix, not worth the hassle

I would like to add one more thing to consider about the fuel gage and especially the yellow light that comes on. There are two persons in this family who drive the zed. One is old, ugly, and not too smart. The other is pretty, dainty, well groomed and smart. However the pretty one seems to think the little yellow light matches her sunny complexion and likes to drive for miles with it on. After one such trip she returned the zed to me, the ugly one, and I noticed that not only was the little yellow light on, but the check engine light was on to match. When I went to my local dealer to have the problem fixed I was told that running the vehicle that low on fuel will sometimes cause air to be pulled into the injectors, causing a misfire and thus the check engine light. So be very carful running with the yellow fuel gage on it may cost you and it is a good idea to make sure your gage is working as it should.
