My drivers window just shattered??

Hi,

Parked up at work today as normal, about an hour later security came to tell me my window had been smashed! On inspection, it was all shattered but onl the parts at the back (where it meets the roof seal) were missing and the rest of the window was bowed outwards as if it had been broken from the inside.

It it a locked car park, security have checked CCTV and nobody has been near my car since I parked up and I'm sure I would have noticed if it had broken when I shut the door.

There is a chance that somebody could have thrown something over the security fence but there is nothing in the car or around the car to suggest that could have happened.

Could it of just broken on its own accord? :(
 
if there was a small chip/crack that you didn't notice and then the temperature changed as it got warmer/colder then this could have done it?
 
The only thing I can imagine is the rails were adjusted to be angled in too much in order to seal tightly. The repeated closings failed to trigger a breakage until the force was applied just one time too many, and even then, it took a while before the built up tension just let go.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, having had time to think, I think it's my own stupid fault. I fitted a pair of Focal Access 2 way 4" speakers a few months back and they seem to foul the windows a TINY bit on the way down. I have been looking for some thinner alternatives but not got round to it.

New window being picked up tomorrow from BMW for £93 - Sunday I'm free to fit it (currently parked in parents garage) and a lesson learned.

- the window appears to be easy enough to change?

- how easy are the doors to fully remove? Thinking it's going to be difficult getting all the glass out otherwise! :headbang:
 
Both window and door are straight forward mechanically, but getting either properly aligned is quite fiddly. I wouldn't be keen to remove the door, getting it back exactly right isn't easy. Perhaps get some lengths of vinyl tubing of plausible diameters, adapt them to your hoover hose with duct tape, and hoover out all the bits?

If there's any crevices you can't get to with tubing, try mopping up the bits with a wet paint brush, any bits that don't come up will be glued in place by the paint and not rattle about later.
 
Certainly don't remove the door as you'll struggle to align then and make a real mess of the hinge paint and risk damaging the skin when you put the door down.

Just vacuum everything out with a flexi pipe and one of those upholstery thin tubes that all vacuums come with and it'll be fine

A set of miniature vaccum cleaner accessories like this comes in very useful
