My dashcam caught a hit & run-

The owner of the damaged car now has a copy of the video ,and very please he was to receive it too .He was unaware the car had been hit as he only uses it on the weekend .

As far as im concerned Ive done my bit .

I disagree, the police should take interest because this is a criminal offence not a civil matter.
Correct, like I said above!

If that was my car I would hope you would report it and if I was in the OP's position I certainly would.
Yes. I don't understand the attitude/comments of 'inconveniences me/wastes my time' Do something good and help out someone, it won't kill you!
+1 The inconvenience doesn't matter, you do what's right - as to what is 'right', you have to let your conscience guide you

^^ Totally agree with this.

I can slightly understand the inconvenience part.
A fatal accident that was witnessed by my wife and I was a good 2 hour drive from our home.
The police contacted my wife a few weeks later and wanted her to travel to their station to give a statement, it was during working hours too to suit the cops rota.
Ended up saying no and if they wanted a statement they would need to travel, which they did.
If its something that has happened locally it nmight not put you out but over a distance could be a major inconvenience.

I think you did the right thing... Reporting it the police i know from first hand if nobody was hurt they will make you fill stupid forms and then do nothing... I reported someone hitting a car years ago to the local plod and they didnt care.

They should, but will they?

A few years ago my (legally) parked car was written off when an artic dragged a corner of its trailer over the bonnet with enough force to crush the front suspension and flip the back end up a 6-inch kerb. A kind passer-by left me a note of the offender's registration. I took the information to the local Police Station and that was the last I heard of it.

I'd guess it all depends on the likelihood of a conviction. The offender can probably say something like "I didn't notice there had been a collision at the time", and they're stuck with trying to prove knowledge. In the absence of injury they'll probably say it's a matter for insurance companies.

I would be the same, they come to you.

I had a similar situation which actually ended up going to court once local traffic plod found out the other insurers were not responding. Charged with failing to stop which ended in a not-guilty verdict as the Magistrate believed the driver's defence that he didn't realise he had hit anything. I wasn't in the room but I think my witness probably performed poorly to questioning. Worth a shot though.

I can only think in your situation that plod would have needed some chasing - you should have a least had a response.

I wouldn't post the video until such a time that you are confident no criminal charges will be brought against the offending driver lest it jeopardise the prosecution.
