My car runs so well now

Hi,

Took my car for inspection 2 to dmworx.

While it was there Mr Vanos came down and did my vanos. He also changed the timing chain and did the shims.

My car is like a different car. Much smother and is now very fast.

I need to take it back as I have a diff leak and get the geometry done.

Russell from DMWorks was a pleasure to deal with and is passionate about the cars.

Steve (mr vanos) did a great job and I can’t praise highly enough.

Happy days!

Simon

Glad to hear Mr Vanos did a good job for you - can I ask how much it was including the timing chain? I've had a quote for just the vanos and shim adjustment from him and was planning this work for early next year to coincide with bringing the M out of hibernation :driving:

This is exactly what I’m planning. I already can’t wait

What's the reason for changing the timing chain? I'm not aware of it being a weak point on the S54 and in fact I don't think I've heard of someone changing one before...

No idea, sometimes you have to trust people.

All I can say is car is running great now and that’s all I care about

That's cool, not knocking it, Steve's a good chap, just wondered if there was an obvious way to tell.

It's really strange to hear about the stretched chain. Some quick googling has indicated that while very rare, it does happen. It's apparently obvious by looking a the way the chain sits on the sprockets - a stretched chain won't sit properly. It's also likely to give intermittent error codes due to degraded timing.

I’ve heard of timing chain tensioners needing doing - which would probably show the same symptoms as a slightly stretched chain - but not the timing chain itself.

Not saying it doesn’t happen, but in about 400,000 miles of driving S38 and S54 engines cars - and having friends with another couple of dozen of these engines) I’ve never heard of one being needed.

Indeed, there are many mechanical faults that can happen in very rare cases, but I certainly won't be losing any sleep over this one
