my car make a "whine" noise

ive noticed recently....my car seems to whine quite a lot...only noticed it at low speeds cos faster i go the noise of the (mighty) engine covers it...but tootling around at 30mph (perfect speed to lock eyes with the ladies) i can hear it...its just like a whine...almost like the sound of an electric motor?
or as if an electric motor is like slowing down...does that make sense?
any other 2.0 drivers or anyone have this?
*awaits many jokes regarding the 2.0*
but yeh just curious reallyy :D

I assume at the time your not braking or doing anything significant?
Is it during acceleration or deceleration or on level throttle? Do these change the noise?

Is it engine or gearbox. ie can you replicate it in neutral

I'd be thinking of driveline noises such as shafts in the gearbox or rear diff, but these then to be more pronounced on or off throttle. Alternative would be alternator drive belts, etc.

See if you can narrow it down and take you eyes of the laaaadies for a mile or 2

mhmm its usually when im just crusing at 30isshh...and i think ive tried coasting and im suree i can still hear it...
i ll try again tomorrow and see...
im sure its fine, its just annoying...and my wipers squeak...bit of wd-40 must do the job im thinking.
i'll do some invest tomorrow :D

sounds like a noisy wheelbearing but hard to say without more info... does it go away if the clutch is depressed? or when going cornering?

Does it do ot with the radio switched on only? Could be alternator whine (interference coming through the speakers)

not had net for ages so a lil update...
it makes the noise when in neutral or in gear....and at all speeds....ive tried it with radio off....cant tell if its stops when i throttle up cos the noise of the mighty 2.0 drowns it out...
im not too worried cos its just a noise atm...and so long as it gives me no hassle until sep im not fussed overly...just wondered thats all :D

I have the same thing on mine, I took it to a BMW service centre and had them check that everything was ok. They said it was nothing to worry about, its just a noise the car makes after several thousand miles usage. At first they did not know what noise I was talking about (I guess they are used to it) but I took one of their engineers out for a drive and explained what I can hear.

Anyhows, I got a signed report from them to say it was fine, so if something major goes wrong I will be after them! :)

Here's what it says...
Investigate whining sound from engine following cold start. Intermittantly sound worse than other times. Occours hot or cold / dry / wet conditions. Test start vehicle. No unusual noises heard. Only higher pitched noise was cold air pump which produced expected noise.

By the way, I noticed that the noise is worse when the weather is cold, and much worse when it is VERY cold.

Does it go away at higher rpms or when you press down the throttle? Take a look at your air hoses/lines. Mine had a whistling noise and it was a cracked hose right at the intake body. Is this whine very faint? There is a dreaded "ghost" whistle....

I get a sound a bit like when air is sucked into something when i release the throttle. the noise lasts for a split second and only occurs when the engine is still cold. once it warms up it's fine... is this normal behaviour?

Woots,re the wipers squeeking,it might be the start of the wiper motors on there way out. thats what mine did when it got to about 3yrs old,and then they started playing up/sticking halfway up the screen,b4 knackering altghtr! had to renew wiper motor(not cheap),tho if u search posts on here it gives u a fix for this, thats a fairly easy diy job. saves u cash :)

well it makes the noise when the wipers arent moving
BUT....when i do use wipers there is a squeak noise...i always thought they might need a bif of the od lube :P but now im worried..hmmmm

No need to be,thats whats great about this forum. Do a search for posts on wiper motors, etc and u will have a fairly easy diy fix to basically clear crud out the wiper mechanism way b4 it needs renewed

(just wish i hadnt found that out 3months after i replaced my wiper motor/tho bmw paid for the cost of the part/£310; and i just paid 115 in labour/out of goodwill and as i was a bmw carclub member/so not bad at all ) :D

sorry to go on about the same old thing but this whine is seriously driving me mad...
the car must sound horrific when i go by....

ive come to the conclusion that it must be a wheel bearing...cos when i depress the clutch and everything i can still hear the noise.....and the noise slows down as the car coasts to a stop

seriously such an annoying sound, cant hear the engine or anything and just the whine...im sure its probs okay but thought id have alil moan
:D

Hi all. I just bought a 2003 2.5i model and have noticed a squeaky/whiny noise coming from underneath the car. At first I thought it might be the breaks, but have since figured out that it is somehow associated with the position of the gas pedal while driving. If the pedal is in just the right position, no matter which gear I'm in, I hear the squeak. Are there any ideas on this?

Thanks,
Tim

I had a wine sound too, mostly from the rear end.

Took it to the dealer and they even checked it with another tech riding in the front seat with ear phones.

They replaced the rear end - - - it still did it!

They tested it again with second tech riding with ear phones again - - - this time they replaced both with new wheel bearings!

Oh yes! Under Warranty!

Got it back from the dealer and still the noise.!!

Went to a GOOD tire shop - checked the tires, rear were cupped - checked the alignment - it was off!

Rear tires were so bad that I had to replace them and get an alignment. NO MORE NOISE!

I should have been watching the alignment and tires better but I had just moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and many of the roads are just awful!

I check on the condition of my tires and alignment often now - - - - - and the Dealer, he said that they did about $4,000 worth of work on it!!!!

I have since moved back to my home in Gainesville, Florida and much better roads! And a great tire store!

Hope your experience comes to a good end!!!

Best!
Jack
