my car has just kicked me in the balls...

Just finished a night shift, went to get into my car and...nothing. Key doesn't work.

The drivers door lock has never worked which annoyed me even more.

Battery works fine as when I unlocked the boot, the alarm went mental.

It was pissing down with rain and our other car is in getting repaired after an accident last weekend. Can my luck get any worse?

A mate dropped me home which was very kind of him.

I loved this car. Now I hate it!

Mate thats rubbish!! I have to admit my zed has tried my patients!!

Hope it gets fixed quick and dose not cost too much.

Could still be the battery as don't alarms normally have a backup battery built in to stop thieves just disconnecting the battery? Or is that only on aftermarket alarms?

Battery in the key.
I know they charge as you drive but do they last forever ?
Is it easy to replace key battery or are the keys a sealed unit ?

I had this once when washing my car i think the button was pressed it killed the battery.... To the point that it needed resetting to the car.

Do you have a spare key?

Never good and never at a good time.

Shame you didn't fix the drivers door lock as now you've lost the ability to just open the door by key and compounded your woes.

Clearly the car battery has enough life to run the alarm, so it should easiy open the door. I'd suspect the key is discharged so try the spare.

If that fails, boot open, battery disconnected and reconnect. It might just work. Take jump leads too.

Once battery reconnected try the ignition, see what happens. Do the light scome on. Can the headlights illuminate, etc. Eliminate main battery, key, etc.

Just a comment. Sealed for life unit with rechargeable battery. Can be cut open and a new one soldered in and key rebuilt or reshelled, but not a known issue.

Mine are both 10 years old and still open the car from 100m range, even the spare used only every 6 moths or so.

Just retrieved the car. Spare key works fine so it appears the battery in the key simply died without warning. Very odd.

My dad is going to open they key up and solder in a new battery for me. Going to do both keys so hopefully I won't have this issue again.

Johnny, my luck is awful at the moment! I bet my face was a picture this morning.

Imagine finished a night shift, walking out to your car in the rain and realising you're not getting in it

That was easy then. Do one key at a time ensuring the repaired one works properly, as you don't want to end up with a stupid issue where you drop the codes and can't get in at all with either key.

Here's what you can expect to find inside, from the last time I took mine apart when abutton stopped 'clicking'

i personally would try recharging the battery first, before opening it.

As i said above.. i had a button depressed and it killed the battery in my fob.. and it lost its sync.

Used a toothbrush charger and still didnt work till i paired it.. but has worked fine since - a couple of yrs! And this is my main key as its coded to seat memory too.

I had a similar problem the other day. My car button wouldn't work to unlock my car. I tried and tried and tried. Nothing.
Then I panicked due to not being able to get home, then someone came out and asked if I was alright. I explained the situation and the guy said ' Why don't you use the keyhole in the door instead' ? :!: :!: :|

Blonde Moment.

Happened twice in total but 9/10 times its fine.

Totally agree guys that one should fully test the key first before surgery. As I posted above my 2 x 10 year old keys work perfectly.

I would get the car open, fired up on the 'flat' key and see what happens.

ben g - it's not simple in the sense the key has to be cut open with a saw or dremmel and then bonded back together.

My dads already cut the key open using a stanley blade so it's too late now  took about 15 minutes.

Oh sh@t I was hoping I could get this on before you did that

The same happened to me two weeks ago all it needed was the key reprogrammed which you can do via five quick turns on / off in the ignition and a combination of key fob presses ( get details on the net)

:poke:

 thanks anyway, i'll remember that for next time!

Tbh the batteries are worth changing. They're 10 years old now. Batteries cost a tenner for 2.

Hi Ben

Where did you source the batteries and do you have a code. One of my Fobs has stopped working and does not seem to recharge...

Cheers

I got them off ebay, they're panasonic VL2020.

Only just bought them today so will probably get them next week.
