My best MPG so far...

Reset the computer in Northampton services, set my self the challenge of getting back home (just south of Gatwick) with my best MPG so far. There were 2 of us in the car, half a tank of petrol and a boot full with suitcases so pretty heavy load for the Z. Petrol was V-Power Nitro. I honestly don't think I touched the brakes once until I pulled off the motorway close to home (must be close to 150miles). I very rarely changed lanes, stayed behind other cars for a bit of 'tow' effect. Most of the time I was aiming for 70ish mph but varied smoothly between 60 and 75. It probably sounds like the most boring drive ever but it was actually a lot of fun trying to move the throttle as little as possible and planning every move to avoid braking. The peak readout was 34.8mpg on a few long downhill stretches but I turned off the engine at home and the computer read 34.4mpg. How did I do? Im sure I could have gotten over 35mpg if I had travelled slower. What is your record for a journey (say over 100miles)?

If it was a 2.0, you did rubbish. If it was an M, then you're a true eco-warrior.

My record (3.0i) is 40.9mpg for a trip from Lincoln to Bishop Auckland.

Got 37 in my 3.0 last week. 100 miles of mixed A roads and then 50 miles on the A1. No silly driving but a few overtakes and then sitting with the traffic flow at normal speed on a very early Sunday morning...so not dawdling at 35. Very impressed after an RX8!

I tried once to drive as economically as possible and managed 51.3 mpg on a 25 miles run in town at night without much traffic mainly on a long straight road next to the beach. I mainly shifted early and drove at partial throttle. Regularly I achieve around 37-38 mpg. Decent economy from my 2.0 i believe.

Brillant figures there by all of you , I can now tell the wife and myself that the mc is a sensible car , just got to pay the car tax this month which is nasty.

In an M that's awesome. The best I've seen is 30 and the computer sits stubbornly on 26 now. That's more a reflection on it being a high days and holidays car.

It's relatively easy over short stretches, and I can get 34-35mpg, but I get bored after 5-10 minutes and the floor it, so that I end up with an mpg of less than I would have had if I'd stayed at my normal 80-85mph (GPS), 83-88mph (speedo) where I get 28mpg.

It's when you think you're doing well and then hit a long uphill stretch where you have to decide whether to labour the engine a little in 6th at 50mph or drop it to 4th/5th at slightly higher revs. Anyone know what's more fuel efficient - as anything I save on the average, means I can hoon a bit more at the weekend without spending so much on fuel.

I worked it out the other weekend that I spend about £120 a week on fuel (about 550 miles), and if I did 5mpg better by being bored out of my skull for 10 hours of driving (maybe more as the reduction in speed would cost time ∴ money), I'd only save about £15 a week.

Driving home from London to Liverpool last Thursday at 70-85mph I got 30.3mpg - but the traffic was flowing well, with no knob-ends on the road, so didn't feel the need to show my superiority to anyone.

Coming home from 'spirited' hoon around North Wales yesterday decided to crawl at 55-60 mph and travelling via A55 where i reset computer then Queensferry M56, Runcorn and M57 I managed 39.something mpg. Wonder if the car is more economical after it's been well and truly caned beforehand??

BMW efficient dynamics eat your heart out :)

I've averaged 26.9 in the 8 weeks i've had my 3.0 si. Most of it town and A road driving. I'm going to Le Mans in June so will see if how much of an improvement i can get. I averaged 32 mpg in my old 2.5i over 10,000 miles.

If your going to Le Mans, it will probably decrease. I went last year and it was awesome. Would have gone this year, but I'm on a stag do!

Yeah! It is impossible to not do toll booth drag racing and if you get caught up in Mad Friday you'll probably also need new rear tyres.

I once asked that question on here...can't remember the name of the thread though...
