My 35iS 6 Months On

Hi All,

Just thought I'd post about how I've been finding things in the first 6 months I've owned my 2013 35iS.

Some of you may recognise (or remember) the car as previously belonging to this forum's very own SO8. He's a lovely chap and I actually felt a teenie weenie bit sad for him when I drove away in the Z4, but thankfully that lasted about 2 miles :P

In the 6(ish) months I've owned the car I've done 7700 miles (doubling the mileage) as it's my daily driver, getting me to and from work in style and, surprisingly, comfort. Stick the car in comfort mode and I'm pleasantly surprised with how it copes on some of Yorkshire's most potholey roads. Don't get me wrong - it's no barge. You're made very aware of how stiff the suspension still is, but I expected the rigidity of sport mode to be the norm.

The acceleration is brutal; unlike any normal car I've driven before. The way the car gains speed just seems worryingly effortless and before you really catch up with yourself you're flirting with the speed limits. With the roof up it's actually quite quiet, too, but who really wants the roof up?!

If it's not raining hard or idiotically windy then the roof needs to be off. Heated seats take any chill away and the exhaust note is something that makes you want to keep on driving, forever. It's getting very vocal now, the pops, bangs and burbles are much more pronounced than when I first picked it up, and this is a great thing

Hoons through the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District have been awesome, and equally cross country mile munching to Bath and Edinburgh for weekends away were completed with ease. I even topped 30mpg on the way down south! Averaging 24mpg since purchase boggles some people's minds, but this car wasn't bought for the economy. DCT box is sublime, rapid changes when you want and unobtrusive when stuck in city traffic. Although it wasn't a factor in my purchasing decision, I can't say I'm offended by the constant petrol head and joe public reception it gets - lots of head turning.

£430 a year for insurance at 24 years old is not to be sniffed at either!

Small downsides... Squeaks. The trim feels well put together for the most part, but there are a couple of irritating noises coming through. I understand this is actually quite normal. Sigh.

Car passed its first MOT with no issues in July, when it also had its first service. Got a 435i as a loaner, not a bad car either. Has been in to the dealers two other times... Once to diagnose why the glovebox failed and once to replace the piston that opens the glovebox door.

TL;DR - Car is awesome. Glad I waited so long. Glad I decided to be young and foolish when I am young and foolish. Can't see me getting bored any time soon.

If you got this far down, sorry for the long post :P

Good for you. Good looking car. :D not a bad car for a 24 year old. Lucky you.
35is is a great allround motor. Only issue I had was the runflats & sorted that out. 1 month since I sold my car & already missing it :(

Helpful review OP, and lovely car!

There is something so right about red leather in a white Z4!

And I thought I was doing well when I bought a 2 year old Capri 2.8i at 25!! Progress I suppose!

Keep enjoying it! :driving:

I did quite well financially thanks to a side project whilst at university... It seemed logical to spend it on a sports car :P

Rear tyres will probably need replacing before the end of the year, so I may take the opportunity to get some normal rubber on instead of the run flats.

More worried about cracked rims than the noise in truth.

Great little write up and lovely looking Z. I'm with you on the roof, if it is dry, it's down, no matter the time or temp! Need to source a decent hat and sunglasses though. Might start a 'what hat do you wear?' thread to get some ideads

Haha, I know the struggle with sun. Always frustrating when it's blinding you through the gap where the roof should be.

Glad I'm not alone with being blinded! I must say though that those little sun visors are surprisingly effective, when the sun is that low ofc...

It does make a very nice noise! We will see if I still enjoy driving it as much when winter gets here...

Great looking car  I bought a 28i almost a year and a half ago after reading so many reviews of the 35is I'm just ever so slightly beginning to feel maybe I should have saved up a few more pennies

You will, it is fine and very comfy ... but you will have to be gentle with the right foot !

How well do the electronic gizmos deal with the the power of the 35is?
They seemed to counter oversteer in the 3.0l ok with a very sudden jolt.
All the electronics flatter to deieve I think.

Well we'll see, it'll be fun if nothing else! Have managed to make the back end twitch pulling out of junctions in the wet, so will have to put my sensible cap on soon enough.

To be honest I might not get much driving done anyway. The electric gate that secures our apartment complex has a tendency to seize shut when it gets too cold, so I may spend all of winter working from home :P

With great difficulty. Be very careful as you learn, it can bite hard. Even stock has a huge amount of torque from low rpm, my rolling road guy was surprised too.

I was travelling around 60mph in a straight line on a wet dual carriageway and attempted to accelerate to pass merging traffic. Lost traction and almost went sideways, that was one brown trouser moment. I'm running MPSS too not ditchfinders!

Also, any hard acceleration on any sort of non-straight bit of road, it will just kick out. Put my foot down on a sliproad from a petrol station and almost drifted into the motorway.

Learn slowly :)
