My 3.0

Hello!

Just bought a 3.0. Always wanted one of these! Lucky to find this 2003 model, with 47k miles on the clock.

A friend bought it for his mum 6 years ago, she averaged around 1500 miles a year since then. He bought her a boxster 2.7 about 2 years ago. Then it sat sitting for a while.

Had a full respray last year.

Sorting out the front number plate, got a smaller legal lettering stick on one to add.

few little jobs to do

1. fix the satnav screen - looks like the case has broken so it doesn't flip up. Maybe some glue.
2. roof has stopped working today - red flashing light - rear motor has been moved already by the zed shed.
3. paint the chrome grill.
4. new wheels/tyres - currently has winter tyres on it, although they look new.

What??? A Zedshed roof motor failed??? Unheard of
He trumpets all over fb that he is the only person in the world to warranty his work, so you should be able to get it fixed for free.

I'm not sure its the motor or one of the other sensors, or could even be the wiring looking at other posts on the forum. The roof stopped working just as it was about to latch to the windscreen, so could be the front motor.

The problem with the agricultural approach of jemmying the motor out through the boot is that it is very easy to dislodge the hall sensors on the left hinge. It could be that the sensor is now not telling the controller that the front motor needs to operate.
Depending where you are, the very best person to talk to about roof issues would be Alan (Number5)

I'm in Northampton, where is Alan based? Not sure we have anyone local, but don't mind travelling for the best man.

Alan is Bristol, Stuart (bigwinn) is Lincoln and I’m near Norwich, but I am pretty full up with zeds for at least the next two weeks.

Are the front hooks fully extended? It is possible they have had a glitch and are in the closed position so don’t enter the slots properly.

I'll have a look when its not raining. Would be after the 25th June I'd be looking as spent all my money on the car and insurance.

In the meantime I assume you have been able to lock it down manually using the Allen key? Does it then unlock or do nothing?

yes used the manual allen key to close the roof, its latches and closes using that.

Just the red light flashing next to the controls and nothing happens when you press that.

So if the red light is still flashing with it all locked down that does seem to point to a hall sensor.
I’m away on holiday so can’t get you any photos but if you can pull the red ring and manually lower the roof you will see two small black cubes mounted on the left hinge. With the roof down the outer of the two is covered by a small metal tang. This activates the magnetic switch to tell the system that the roof is fully down and switch off the motors.
The other sensor is behind the hinge and should be in line with the other one. It signals the system when the roof is fully up, to lock the front down. As this one projects into the space above the motor it is the one that gets clouted if care is not taken.
If this sensor is misaligned you may be lucky and find that simply realigning it solves your problem .
Got to be worth a go for a free fix.

Hi and welcome to forum. It looks like you've found a gem with such low mileage and a recent full respray.

It's good to see you are getting some good advice on the roof motor issue as I can't help having only had Coupes!

What was the precise position of the roof when it first stopped working?

I'd mention 2 other causes for the roof not working: the rear shelf sensor and the door windows not moving down. The latter happens to me every now and then, no idea why. I then manually lower the windows and then it works just fine all the way to the end of the process when the windows move back up. But I'm not sure if this case gives the red light flashing.

When I bought the car the roof would occasionally not work and after just a few tries it died. What has happened was that the roof motor just died, the electronics were fried inside it. This was the 2nd roof motor for this car, it was perfectly watersealed, there was no sign of water present inside the motor housing. So I have no idea why it burned. I moved the new motor in the trunk then, just in case it dies again, it will be much easier to replace :dizzy:

Don't forget the rear shelf causes an amber flashing light, and nothing works at all if you try to lower it.
