My 2006 Z4 Coupe

The front of your car looks much cleaner with the blanking plates.

It's not you're going to miss the fog-lights - I can't remember the last time I ever used front fogs!

Cheers, I think it looks better too.

I’ve tried to use them before but because they’re so corroded, they didn’t really help.

In other news, I went to check on the new headlight bulbs tonight to see if they’re any brighter and the bulb warning light had come back and I have a double quick indicator flash in the left hand side (which I didn’t have before). I’ve since spent all evening checking bulbs etc and everything is working. I’ve even removed the rear light clusters to swap over the fog light bulbs but it’s still there.

I think my first port of call tomorrow is to check that the bulbs, especially the fog light are properly connected and I’ll clean the electrical connections. Having done a bit of research that sounds like a strong possibility…..either that or the module that controls the lighting is fried.

I wouldn't leave it too long.

I had a bulb warning on my 330i for one of the tail-lights on the boot-lid and ignored it until it was due a service because the tail-light in the wing was working so it passed an MOT. It turned out to be a split wire in the boot-lid loom but because I had ignored the warning light I also needed a reconditioned FRM module. :(

I’ll be looking into it first thing tomorrow morning.

I’ll start with the two bulbs that I replaced today and go from there. If still no joy, I’ll speak to an Indy on Monday.

Talk about one step forward and two backwards! I now have all my lights functional again, but still have the warning light which is no accompanied by the annoying fast flashing indicator if I indicate right. :headbang:

I feel your pain!

BMWs of this era seem prone to random electrical issues. I moved my 330i to my drive to swap the winter wheels for summers and got a bulb warning light. But after I was done I moved it back, reset the TPMS and thankfully the bulb warning didn't come on again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah, pain in the bum.

My old 330i used to chuck up random bulb out warning lights as well but not constant like this.

So, I basically had a Doris moment last night when checking the bulbs and failed to notice that only half of the passenger side front indicator was illuminating, so it looks like a dud from indicator bulb is the culprit. I’ve bought a new bulb which I’ll pop in tomorrow and see if that sorts the issue. After spending all day cleaning my wife’s 330i I lacked the enthusiasm to fit it tonight.

That bubble cracking off while removing the arch liner was its last parting shot!
Nice find on the 'new' wings !

Yeah a nice little screw you!

Having had a fiddle at lunchtime, my car appears to now have all the lights working again. Yay.

New bulb for the passenger side indicator.

Wheel off again to get better access because it’s hidden in here.

God, I have BMW lights; they’re such a pain in the bum to work on.

Glad you shared your experience as it helps us all.
Happy you resolved your issue to.
It’s really frustrating when problems are difficult to resolve and not knowing the cause.

The most annoying thing was that if I’d engaged brain, it was painfully obvious. Oh well.

I’ve washed the can again tonight and I still have lights. It might have been a coincidence but it was after last Mondays wash that my issues started.

Quick question as I am doing my fog light blanks this weekend, what did you do with the plugs that go into the back of the fogs? just zip tie them out the way and assume you dont get any warning lights?

Yeah, there is a little diagonal brace each side to I’ve zip tied the bulb holders up there and left the bulbs in so there are no errors.

Nice one, many thanks for the quick response.

Fun and games with the Z4 today. I had a free day whilst my life and lad were in London so thought that I’d replace the heated elbow connector that caused me so many issues last summer and the small DISA which I was sure was failing due to where I could hear a rattle from the intake manifold.

Todays parts ready to be fitted; new small DISA, heated elbow connector, intake manifold gaskets, throttle body gasket and a valvetronic motor gasket.

IMG-9561.jpg

The source of much of my frustration!

IMG-9560.jpg

Air intake removed and plugs disconnected and labelled up in case there’s a pause before it goes back together.

IMG-9562.jpg

It wasn’t long before the intake manifold was off. It’s so much easier on the Z4 than a 1 or 3 series I because there’s so much more space around the engine.

IMG-9563.jpg

Inlets were stuffed with paper towel after this picture was taken.

Intake manifold off, ready for bits to be removed / replaced.

IMG-9564.jpg

The heated elbow connector that caused me so much grief last summer. It didn’t want to come out either, but I got there in the end. I had to replace it with a Viaco part because BMw don’t have stock of them and can’t tell me when they’ll be back in stock again. I imagine that they’ll be NLA soon despite the failure rate. At least mine didn’t catch fire.

IMG-9565.jpg

I noticed that this connection doesn’t seem the best on the part I fitted last summer. Like the previous one, there seems to be some slight oil misting at this connection.

IMG-9566.jpg

I’ve ordered a replacement OE part which I’ll be collecting tomorrow.

Then the small DISA was removed. Other than some worn seals, there was no play in the flap. Bugger.

IMG-9567.jpg

Due to the wear on the green seals, I fitted the replacement.

IMG-9568.jpg

I then removed the large DISA…..

IMG-9569.jpg

IMG-9570.jpg

This was intact but very floppy. I was able to open and close it by hand and was obviously the source of the rattle at idle. I’ve ordered a replacement from Carpartsinmotion via eBay because of a discount code. Hopefully it’ll arrive on Saturday so I can get the car back together.

I didn’t bother with the valvetronic motor gasket because I want to see if the new DISA’s solve my slightly erratic cold idle.

Quite a bit of work going on there Sam. I have the silver top E86 also, and tried to remove the intake manifold last year when I was changing the starter motor.
There was one pipe going from the manifold at the bottom into the depths of the engine bay that I just couldn't free, so I never got the manifold completely off. I may give it another go, just a bit annoying though that the bolts are one time use, so would have to get another set.

Nice work
Hopefully the parts resolve your issues.
I’ve not heard of the heated elbow connector causing issues. Hopefully the replacement part works ok and lasts.

I suspect I have a weeping Valvetronic gasket so will be keeping an eye on mine and following your progress too.

Some of the vacuum lines and hoses are a pain. The oil return pipe from the CCV is a pig to get off because you’re working blind and access is annoying. I found it l easier to disconnect from the CCV and leave attached to the sump.

Thanks.

You can normally tell it’s leaking because the recess for plugs 3 and 4 fill with oil.

The heated connector is quite a common failure. It was subject to a proper recall in the states. They can fail badly enough to catch fire as someone on Pistonheads found out with their 330i!
