My 2003 Z4 plays MP3's....headunit and changer

It's not a nav thing, chances are they replaced the headunit with one from an 05+ but swapped the gray front onto it so that it would match the rest of the stuff in the car. That's what I would do in my 04.

good point, if you removed the head the sticker would reveal the manufacture date, this would confirm.

Good suggestion from a newbie!

I've got a newer MP3-playing headunit awaiting fitting - I'll certainly investigate if the front panel could be swapped over with my existing grey one, would save me buying the black air vents to match if it did...

interesting idea.

would be interested to know if the build date of the stereo didn't match the car...

that raises a question in my head...

I had a new stereo fitted at the end of 2007 under AUC... still dark grey front, would that be like the original ie not be able to play 'em or like beancounters :?

not really an issue for me as I play through my iPod - just wondering :D

So how come my cd stack plays mp3 cd's? I thought the stackers didn't play them?

maybe they've changed that too?

I don't suppose you fancy ripping the headunit out and checking the date?

or maybe (real time thinking here) it could all be down to the type of media used?
I know that in my focus, if I used a TESCO branded disk, it'd skip on the middle couple of tracks, yet a verbatim worked fine.
I also know that XBox v1's used to be very picky over which dye in DVDRs it would or wouldn't read.

Could it be something similar? (IE, the NEWER headunits have a better laser that works with a larger range of disks?)

Could you post what type of disk you used, and what speed it was burnt at?

(For reference sake, I've tried a TDK CD-R80 700mb 52x disk, burnt at 24x)

They all work. For my previous Z I got the radio from the US, a second one (spare) from Germany. Extend your search world wide, you should be able to get one for about 50 euro or so.

Here is one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OEM-2003-08-BMW-E85-E86-Z4-BUSINESS-CD-RADIO-PLAYER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem20adeabd15QQitemZ140356795669QQptZCarQ5fAudioQ5fVideo

Offer $50 or so ... he won't sell it for the $200

because they made two different cd changers too, one that plays mp3's and an older one that doesn't. The changer is just device on the iBus controlled by the headunit. I've been tempted to replace my changer with one that plays mp3, but it's kind of expensive and a pain to get at.

P.S. best part is I bought the headunit on ebay for only £21 - absolute bargain to gain MP3-disc compatability in an older Z4
