MX5 gets a sound generator

replied to the thread about that, someone suggested there was a simple way to give the z4 more engine noise too, anyone know how/where?

Have a sound generator machine in my z4, its just a pipe that you remove bits of foam from for a louder sound in the cabin.

Have you got a 3.0 ?

If so, from the picture below you'll see the sound pipe (number 6). At each end of that pipe is a bit of foam.

Simply remove one or both pieces of foam. (the one nearest the firewall is probably easiest to remove)

I've tested it on mine and its far too loud with both foam bits removed.

thanks for the replies, sounds like i'll have to give it a go with one bung out at the weekend. Assume it's just a screwdriver job to undo the clip.

Did you put one back in or did you return it to standard if it was too loud? Assume there is no danger of dirt or water intake as it is after the filter though maybe one bung might be worth leaving from that perspective too?

I just put the foam piece nearest the firewall back in.

It depends on which piece you want to remove, the one nearest the firewall just pulls out (attached to 7 on the picture).

Crusoe.. Its mega easy. No scredrivers required at all. Just pull the end that goes into the cabin (is that the firewall that people are referring to?) until it comes out. Hopefull the rubber around the hole to the cabin will stay in. If not just pop it back into place so your ready to place the pipe straight back in. The foam this end is the larger of the 2 - 4-5 inches.

The other end is the same just pulls out and pushes back in. The foam at the front end of the pipe is only about 1-2 inches.

At the moment Ive got the larger one out. Sounds great until you start getting towards the redline then in my opinion its a bit too loud. So Im going to be putting it back in this weekend.

I tried it with just the smaller foam out and it didn't really make enough difference. So Id say that there is no happy medium really, although Im tempted to take both out, cut the larger one down a little and try it like that. Does anyone know if you can buy the foam seperately??

BTW, Id never changed or checked oil level in a car before this, and I did it in the dark and in 10 minutes so It really can't be difficult

Actually, Im going to put mine back in now. Shall I take some pics?

Too late, I took some anyway. Probably only going to be any use to absolute beginners like me but I was crapping myself when I started pulling at the sound generator pipe.
EXCUSE THE DISGUSTING STATE UNDERNEATH MY BONNET :P

First off... here it is as you look into the engine bay.

Close up of the end of the pipe going into the firewall. Outlined in the red is the rubber bit that can come out when you pull at the pipe.

Firewall end pulled out.

This is what the larger foam looks like inside the pipe.

Just to show the size of the larger foam.

This is the other end of the pipe which has the smaller foam in. Ignore the red line Ive added by accident.

Just to show what comes off so you don't pull/force the wrong part.

Small foam in place.

And thats that folks.

Who on earth wants a 7500 rpm screaming 4 cylinder piping inside?? Now 6 or 8's as a different story...

Sorry, im not sure i understand this? No one is installing it in a 2.0
