Sorry if this is a dumb question but .....

What is the best method of putting my iTunes collection onto the hard disk in the car - (4000 tunes) I'm now fully armed with a 32Gb USB Stick ! :D

I dont know if you can copy from usb stick onto the cars hard drive...I'm sure someone will clarify this soon. There is a usb port in the glovebox, try plugging it into that and seeing what happens?

Otherwise, just plug the stick into the usb port under the armrest and access the music directly from that. Might let you copy from there also?

Cars HDD is 12GB I think, so the whole 32GB wont fit, unless it compresses it?

Correct, 12GB, and MP3's are already compressed so you'll transfer and fit what you can via the USB connector in the glove box. Failing that, leave it plugged into the USB connector in the arm rest and use it from there.

Whoops!

Just looked and iTunes says 4k tracks = 25GB - I think there is a change of plans ahead by me being a bit more selective for in car music and /or leaving the 32GB usb in the arm rest for longer journeys!

I'd just leave it in. It will take a little while to categorise all the music, but then you can search it easily.

The only caveat to the USB music is that you can't voice control it. You can voice control music held on the idrive.

As in 'music search' 'artist' 'elbow'.. Which is handy on the move rather than scrolling around the screen.

Is there any way to upgrade the HD size? 12GB for music is not enough. I use a USB and just leave it plugged in. I can't be bothered switching between the two so the HD is rendered redundant.

Not that I know of. It's the same hd that holds the car software and nav maps etc so you'd need to have all that moved to a new hd!!

Or buy the next z4 which has the new idrive and lots more storage (hd) space! Lol

Didn't know you can voice control music on the hdd, got to give that a try :D

I have copied my iTunes library and have applied a conversion prog to mp3 format - I will then copy my selections to a USB stick.
If I understand properly, I can then install onto the HD which will then organise the files which I will then be able to voice control?

The Hard Drives used to be an automotive standard which were more rugged and bloody expensive. Hopefully they're all using SSD's now. I ought to be able to find out as our technology powers the BMW IVI systems.

Well you can if you have voice control yes... (if its an option fitted to your car.. idrive by default doesn't have voice control).

No need to convert the files and no real reason to put them on the Hardrive - no least as you can get more music on the stick. Just go to your 'Music' folder and copy whichever albums you want onto the USB stick. When you first insert it in the USB slot in the armrest the car will take a little while to catalogue the files. You should then see all of the files on the iDrive. If you use the search option at the top of the list then each album will play in the correct order.

I have copied music onto the HDD, and have the same music on the USB.
I use the HDD if I want to find an album and I leave the USB on random.
I found it annoying that the random on the HDD switched off whenever the ignition was switched off and had to be turned on again each time. But for some reason random remains active on the USB. It got annoying on the HDD as random isn't that random (I.e it seems to be a random track from a non random sequence of albums each time the random feature is turned on) e.g it would always be a James song, followed by queen, Killers etc. using random on the USB avoids this.

The USB in the armrest is easy access but I think a stick in there looks like it could easily be bashed - I've found in my bag of old computer parts a 70mm long m/f lead. I think I'll use it .

I think I'll have one of those! Neat enough so as not as easy to bash.
The USB in the armrest works ok for my use. At least I have a load of music for the trip to Germany - anything rather than some of those radio stations!

Eventually got around to buying one of these little fellas. Brilliant bit of kit. It justs lives in the armrest usb socket and currently has about 17 Gb of music on it.
Very neat and tidy and a much better soulution than a standard USB stick and you would have to really try to damage it!
