HI Guys,
My first post on the forum! picked up a 2004 Z4 3.0 .. running very well considering the 156K miles on her :) not expecting to get too much use with it as we dont have many sunny days in Northern Ireland lol.

The car has Sat Nav and radio but no sound, checking the boot there is no amp! its been removed, i haven't had a full inspection but at a glance i couldn't see many cables beside where the amp should be.
HOw would i go about getting sound to come out? buy and try a new amp? not cheap from what i can see online.. Ditch the satnav and just plug a standard radio in? if i do that will there be standard speaker cables to connect in?.. I'm guessing not

or feck it just listed to the phone via some sort of bluetooth speaker that i connect manually?

Don't mind spending a few quid to sort if its relatively easy to fix. Problem is i haven't a clue, if anyone can help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Marty

If there's no cabling there then it is far more likely you have the standard 6 speaker setup that has no amp rather than someone having removed it from a 10 speaker setup. Another tell will be if you have cubby holes behind the seats, where the 10 speaker (which does have the amp) system will have 'bass' speakers. If so it's the head unit that drives the speakers on the 6 speaker setup so I would investigate that. Replacement oe head units are not expensive 2nd hand. Good luck.

I very seldom switch the radio on in mine. Prefer the sound of the engine and wind any day. :D  Welcome to the mad house.

After a vin check turns out from factory I should have
Hifi System Professional
Cd Changer Bmw For 6 Cds
Navigation System Professional

Does this help on working out if I should have an amp?

From the FAQ.....

There are 3 Audio options in the Z4. Basic, Hifi and DSP (Carver/Logic7).

Basic has 6 speakers & no amp (with 8 visible grills),

Hifi has 10 speakers with an optical amp,

and DSP is the Carver system with 10 speakers, optical amp and DSP settings you can change.

If you have cubby boxes behind the seats you have basic, if you have DSP settings you have the DSP, anytihng else you have the Hifi option.

Anything other than the Basic Hifi is incredibly difficult to upgrade.

Carver was the original Launch top Hifi named after the company that designed the Speakers, after 2007 it became the Logic7 system, all have Phillips Speakers.

Count the speakers you have. There's either Tweeters in the door near the wing mirror or there isn't. Might not have speakers in the door either although the grille is there.

The tweeters are always there. The six speakers on the basic system are in the foot wells, tweeters in the doors and behind the head rest (above the cubbies). The grille for the driver in the doors is empty.

Hi Rich,
You have the 10 same setup with no amp and you have sound?

If that’s the case it may just be the radio is done which il replace, don’t want to go chasing parts

Right enough. Mine was missing the door speakers not the tweeters.

The amp doesn't sit by the battery, it's attached to the bulkhead. You need to remove quite a lot of trim to get to it.

The AMP sits in beside the battery.

Here's the part numbers for the brackets and AMP etc. that go in beside the battery where the AMP is located if the car has one.

Ah, I see, depends if it's the roadster or the coupe.
On the coupe it's on the bulkhead.

Hatchbacks eh!
Yeah it's a pain in the ass to get to for sure.
But at least they don't get water damaged like the ones with wendy houses on the back seem to :poke:

Word on the street is that they had to relocate the amp due to the rusty hatches on the hatchback and to sort out the centre of gravity due to the extra weight of the tin roof due to the roof racks usually carrying a ladder for the window cleaning round.
