Well just deleted one music file to create space.....now all is deleted..
Not sure why it did that.

Only other time had problem, removing battery, renamed music files to some generic filing, requiring all files to be renamed.
Rainy bank holiday sorted.

Poor quality when encoded to the idrive music store..better off with almost any other solution.. :tumbleweed:

Hmmm, odd that it would delete the lot.
But yes probably a hell of a lot easier to just put your music on a memory stick, you can have album art as well.

My memory stick is very small in size so doesn't stick out too far (about 5mm). It seems there is some discussion regarding the max capacity for the USB in the centre console. I'm currently running a 16gb, but it seems most say 32gb is the max (I've only got 16 simply because that's what I bought).

Well that's news, i thought 4gb was the limit. Tried larger and it wouldn't see them.
Never tried playing from a usb stick.

You can run at least 64gb if it’s formatted in Fat 32 format…normally windows doesn’t allow you to format devices greater than 32gb with fat 32 but other utilities will..my Garmin dash cans have 512gb discs in fat 32 format..

I will look today, had the car over 10 years now and can say never tried to play from usb stick.
Read the manual might be good idea!

Having read manual it seems to me only if car has under armrest usb that files can be played from usb stick.
Reason why i have never seen any message or option appear from glove compartment usb.

Most, but not all, iDrive equipped Z's will have the armrest USB/AUX but a very small number will only have the AUX. They all have the glovebox USB as that's how you update the Nav and load the hard drive music. Music can't be played from there though.
With the armrest USB you can plug in an ipod (using the USB & AUX), a memory stick (for music) or an iPhone (for use with BMW Apps etc, ie Connected Drive) depending what's been spec'd from the factory.

The USB may also be found on non-iDrive cars, this would give you the option of a memory stick or the ipod options.

My car has AUX, but no USB under arm rest.

Arr, well that could be a problem then, looks like you'll just have to reload your hard drive.

USB can be retrofitted, just depends what you currently have installed.

I upgraded the mulf to the newer version and used the second port for a usb port in the boot

Works a treat
