Multimedia LCD Panel not retracting

Hi all,

My E89 2014 'was' under warranty until a couple of weeks ago, it went into BMW for them to sort the multimedia screen that is supposed to retract (fold down) when the engine is switched off.

They tried updating the software, gave the car back... not resolved.
Went in again, they reset the system... not resolved.
I am now waiting for them to book it in again under warranty, as they didn't fix it when it was under warranty.

Has anyone else seen this issue... I was always taught 'there is no such thing as a silly question' :-)... so for anyone with an E89, does your screen retract/ fold every single time or are there scenarios where it 'shouldnt'?

Thank you

Only had mine about 6 weeks but it retracts every time, have you tried retracting it through the idrive?
If it still won’t retract then I would suspect that the motor may have failed

When I had my E89 I had a similar issue. Every now and again I’d notice it not go down with the engine turned off but then I’d go to car half an hour later and it would be down. It would open every time as it should and also worked every time with the voice control so I assumed all was ok with the motor and just grew to ignore the issue.

When I was installing my dash cam, the cloth I used to clean the glass got caught in the mechanism and it wouldn’t move.

Sh1t my pants!

After a while it started working again and it had logged an error code!

I wonder if it detects an overload on the motor, because it seems to have a clever design where the gears are exposed on the righthand side. Why weren't they designed so that no foreign object could get trapped.
I have had a couple of instances where it would not rise or retract, but that's in 7 years of daily use.

Just wanted to provide an update and the conclusion to this matter, in case anyone ever has a similar experience.

Took car into BMW for the third time for the screen that doesn't retract; after updating the software twice, it was inevitable that it would come down to a hardware fault.

So they rang me and quoted £2500 for the multimedia screen replacement, alluding to the fact that they expected me to pay :headbang:
... as per my earlier post, the original issue went in before the warranty had expired- anyway, after some back and forth... the manufacturer (BMW) agreed to pay for the hardware and most of the labour apparently... so the dealership just wanted to charge me £52;

Principally I wasn't prepared to pay anything... so now it's all FOC under the original warranty claim, and will be fixed up tomorrow PM.

Hopefully ready for a warm weekend! :driving:

I have the same problem, screen does not fold down when the engine is turned off, only happened 3 or 4 times since I bought the car in April and iDrive works perfectly. Voice control will not close the screen, just goes back on it's own after I've parked up and left her.

Luckily I have warranty and will be visiting BMW to sort out. My previous E89 I owned from new for 3 years never had this problem. :(

When i bought my Zed 7 years ago i asked a dealer to read the key. It came back and said the rear vent mod had been done and had a replacement iDrive screen.

Possibly a common issue then... fortunately my replacement will come with a 2 year warranty
