I also struggled for a while to find any buttons, I've just managed to pick up a wheel with buttons on it for £130 ish from ebay. Plan is to first check it works by fitting it in the car, then I'll take it out and will eventually get it refinished by Royal Steering Wheels.
I couldn't find any buttons either, although there are definitely some other wheels on ebay with buttons on them?
Definitely also head down to your local BMW dealer parts guys, they'll be able to get a set probably?
the button set is obsolete from BMW, both silver and black and according to real OEM, they are unique to Z4. i've looked a few wheels on eBay but they all seem very expensive for a well-worn part. My local dealer warned me the buttons were terribly un-reliable and they sold lots when only a few years old.
FWIW, ive found out the E46 fans chase Z4 wheels because they are fractionally smaller . 14' on Z4 compared with 14.5", 14.75 or 15" on E46 depending on exact model. there are minor differences in the way the air bag mounts and the way the button wires go thru the slip ring. So, i guess that rules out E46 as a source of wheels.
That's interesting, as I had an E46 325ti Sport Compact for over 3 years as a daily alongside my Z4 and I never thought the steering wheel seemed too big! :?
Would you really notice an extra half inch? After all an E46 wheel would probably be much cheaper, partly because there are so many more of them, but also because SE and Sport models all had the MFSW as standard.
