Multifunction leather wheel

Sorry for asking all these dumb questions but basically since I will see my car for the first time on the very day I drive to Spain where she will live there are things I don't know and would like to consider before arriving with Mike at ZedShed which I plan to do en route. I already have him looking at stuff for me and thought to save him time I would ask you guys this one.

My wheel looks like a non leather option on my 05 SE. I have seen a leather multifunction for sale for 199 GBP. Is this an easy retrofit/upgrade? Is the wiring for this going to be in my car and is the stereo likely to be one which will work with this option? Is it a viable and worthwhile upgrade?

Hope you can advise please and thanks in advance.

No such thing as a silly question mate!

Steering wheel will be a direct swap. So no issues there, take airbag off then swap steering wheel and airbag back on.

With multifunction some cars are pre-wired I think. Some aren’t. I think I’m right in saying pre-facelift normally comes pre wired with a lot. Such as cruise control.

With regards to steering wheel itself I recommend a Royals Refurb Z4 wheel (which is a thicker Z4 wheel) obviously re-trimmed. The other option is to get a M wheel. Which is naturally thicker and better to grip. If you say yours is plastic then maybe it would be worth sending it off for re-trimming. The multi-function part can be taken from any wheel and put on another.

In my opinion I wouldn’t bother with multifunction. You’re much better off with a plain refurb’d wheel. The standard wheel is a little ‘thin’ when you wrap your hands around it. If your Zed doesn’t already have it and depending on what driving you’re doing I’d seriously consider getting cruise control which can be retrofitted.

Thanks kis. Sounds like good advice. I will be doing a few motorway miles and have grown used to cruise control.

At risk of losing this by exposing it, here is a link to the wheel I have seen. Would you pass this by in favour of your linked one?

Z4 cruise control isn't on the steering wheel, just stereo and phone controls. Waste of time IMO. Cruise control is on a small stalk on the left side of the column below the indicator stalk.

Straight swap and dependent on build date yours should be re weed so a 10 minute job to swap. If your used to steering mounted controls then this is a mod worth doing.

As mentioned the steering controls are for phone and for stereo. They do not control cruise. Cruise is a separate stalk below the indicator stalk. Just smaller and shorter.

You’re better off spending the money on a royals steering wheel refurb. If you want to buy the one pictured.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I want to restore the spokes on my MFSW. They are the satin/dark chrome ones. Ex-factory, it looks like it has been chromed then painted with a tinted clear-coat. Any help?

His number is on there. He does just the steering wheel trims refurbishment on their own.

I’m sure he can sort you out with a different colour / finish! My point is sometimes it pays for someone who’s done it before..to do it. Past experience and all that.
