Multi Function steering wheel compatability

I would love to upgrade my standard 2005 steering wheel to a multi function job at minimal cost. Z4 m ones are rare and expensive. What else fits and works with minimal engineering? Having searched there isn't too much info. On other sites some say 3 series m or otherwise is a straight swap physical and electrical....others say no...im confused...would like it to be true as there are loads of 3 series mfsw m and non m for much cheapness. Anyone to provide clarity....im confused.

You just need the buttons and wiring, no need to replace the wheel.

Seen them on bmw mini parts at 180 quid plus. Would also still have my skinny wheel. 120 quid for a re trim plus 180 for buttons is pushing the price barrier...im tight....ish...

3 series sport wheels 100 quid ish, chunkier and cheaper than z parts..I'm greedy want it but not at any cost..for now...anyone need a low mileage kidney?

Great..physical sorted it's a good un. Concerned though as the poster mentions electrics don't work. This is the confusion ive encountered in searching..no definitive.

M wheels come up on a regular basis on eBay, price depends on condition £170/£270.
I paid £250 for the one I have.

Saw one last week for 185. 100 quid 3 series seems better if I can work it..
