Much difference between 2.5 and 3.0 (PRE-FACELIFT)?

I think a pre facelift car would be a 3.0i SE/sport
To further muddy the waters I think there was a lower powered 2.5 car (pre-facelift) with about 170hp :?
Regards

No sport for the pre-facelift. They were all SE models for the 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0.

In the real world there is little difference- I would suggest you find the best 6 cyl car be it a 2.2, 2.5 or 3.0 you can on your budget ie a better specced/cared for lower engined car is better than a unloved 3.0

Although the 3.0 typically had M Sport suspension. (which is not the same as the M suspension)

In pre-facelift the choice is very simple. The 3.0 is the only one to go for and the price difference is nothing.

The 3.0 is more economical with the 6th gear on long distance, is significantly faster, has many more additional equipment items compared to the 2.5 as standard. Has the sports suspension as standard for example as well.

What he says :)

+1 what pvr says.... The 3.0 comes with better spec as standard.. Which when buying second hand and the price difference between them makes the most sense.

If you go for a 2.5 I'd suggest you get the Si Sport version, in real world driving there's little to choose between it and the 3.0 litre. I'd rather have the better spec 2.5si Sport than a lower spec 3.0 litre. I've said it before here - the 2.5si engine is a really sweet little unit, silky smotth and it spns up very quickly. Took my mate out in mine last week and floored it to overtake another car. His response went something "F***ing hell!!!

My first post here.......but this ^^^^is precisely what you should do. People get bogged down looking for specific colours, wheels, engines etc when what you really need to do is look for a well cared for well looked after decent example . All of the 6 cylinder engines are good and will run for many many miles if they are looked after . In real terms all have plenty of power so condition and care should be your first priority .

I run an 03 2.5 and its great. back box delete sounds amazing, coils so it handles very very well and on the backroads I drive daily there is simply no difference ( i know this as my neighbour with the 3.0 coupe can't keep up on those roads ) a good clean car and ability to drive it and have fun is way more important than the extra .5 IMO. find a good one and enjoy

Maybe he's a crap driver?

A pre facelift 2.5i will not keep up with a 3.0si.
What he said

Which is surely what RLFILMCO was saying, a properly set up and driven car can slaughter motors with much, much more power on paper. Back to the OP's question yes there is a difference between a pre-facelift 2.5 and 3.0 it's about 15% in bhp and a cog extra in the box and some extra kit on a 3,0 depending which models you are comparing (or things to go wrong as owners of older cars would say  ).

I chose a low mileage well maintained mint 2.5SE over a more average 3.0 for my budget, with such marginal differences in driving experience choosing the right example rather than spec will avoid disappointment and financial pain. Or save a few quid on the purchase and invest in some driving development.

But then you're comparing modified with standard.

A well set up 3.0 will beat a standard 2.5...

Swings and roundabouts.

Bottom line, fine a clean 3.0 :D

By well set-up I mean well maintained and sorted (not modified - noo never that! :o ) and driven well.

15% extra bhp will make FA difference on the road compared to the state of the car and proficiency of the driver. If the OP can get the best possible 3.0 for his budget then brill, but overlooking a better 2.5 would be foolish when you are dealing with cars over 10 years old and a potential for heartbreaking bills. As you say swings and roundabouts.

The difference is significant though in performance. 192 versus 231 bhp, 6.8 versus 5.7 and if there is an identical condition 2.5 and 3.0, the price difference is almost nothing at that age.
