Much difference between 2.5 and 3.0 (PRE-FACELIFT)?

A pre facelift 2.5i will not keep up with a 3.0si.

Thats my point. On a road where you rarely get out of 3rd a 2.5 can trounce a 3.0 if driven better. Its not as simple as saying a 3.0 is faster than 2.5. reality is it depends on how its driven, what rod etc, and condition.

That said, If, when buying my Z there was 2 side by side, both in this condition, one 2.5 one 3.0 I'd go for the 3.0 obviously. That rarely / never happens though. just drive one and buy the best looked after one you can find.

The only reason I wouldn't buy the 3.0 m54 engined Bmw is because of the reputation of being an oil burner.
Not just z4, my 3 and 5 series both had the 2.5.

Strange that the 2.5 never uses a drop of oil but the 3.0 can use 1l 1000 miles :headbang:

That problem is not limited to the 3.0 engine, the 2.2 & 2.5 lumps can also suffer-it's the same design engine don't forget :?

I know it's the same design but you never read about oil problems on the smaller engines, very popular occurrence on the 3.0.

Look on zroadster.net/org plenty of people with m54 2.2 engines burning oil on there, it's the design that leads to oil burning, not the capacity.

That's like anything though.

Lewis Hamilton in a Clio 197 would probably keep up with an f430 driven by some old fart down the country lanes.

Doesn't mean you should go and buy the Clio though does it?
