mtorque gone

I noticed from a thread over on PH that mtorque has been closed down, apparently because of pressure from BMW.

Kind of worrying when a company is closing down sites for enthusiasts of its own cars!!!!

Just had a look. They did close down once when it was still bm3w.co.uk so maybe there is still a chance it will come back. The E85/6 section was dead anyway, I used to enjoy browsing the E9x section but that was pretty dead too.

M-Torque Announcement

We are sorry to announce that as of September 15th 2009 M-Torque has ceased operation.

I personally would like to thank all of our regular users and contributors to the site over the last 8 years for their support through both the good times and the bad. The decision has not been taken lightly and is based on feedback from various users of the site and also ultimately the decision by BMW AG to try and remove this site from the internet.

To everyone who works for BMW UK and BMW AG you can thank your management for their part in this decision. This site has never been a commercial venture despite their ridiculous claims, yet BMW pursued us for many months with the intention of having this site removed from the internet, which considering this site was created to support their brand is, in my view, very short sighted and one that saddened me greatly, since a lot of time and effort has been put into this site by so many.

If BMW wish to review their decision and work with us to build a community that again can work with BMW and support them, I would happily change this decision.

If you have any comments, feedback or indeed if BMW wish to contact us, then please feel free to write to [email protected], we cannot promise to reply to all messages received and we may even publish some on here.

Best regards, Matt

It is a sad day indeed to see it go as it was really my first point of call and was partly responsible for me getting my M3 & Z4M.

I do hope it will be back in some shape or form, Matt was a good guy.

When I click on the link for MTorque I get nothing? Where did you get that message from Mike?

cheers

Jay

I couldn't register as they won't allow 'free' email service addresses, so my gmail one that I use for everything was no good for them.

The only way I can see BMW being able to 'force' them to shut down is if they're using BMW logos or information that's not in the public domain and without permission.

The original gripe from BMW was because the site was called www.bm3w.co.uk and they didnt like this.

It was then changed to MTorque and as far as I was aware BMW had taken no further action and the site continued to run.

They may well have been back in contact with Matt and started making noises again but he hadn't mentioned anything recently.

Very short sited of them, probably just some IP lawyer from BMW trying to justify their worth....

I wouldnt be suprised if it comes back though, would be a real shame to lose all the information that was gathered over the years......

It's a shame it's gone, there was a great sense of humour on there, especially the way chavs and idiots got dealt with.
I think the lack of activity on the site recently probably had a lot to do with Matt closing it, I've noticed quite a few forums seem to have become very quiet since the start of the credit crunch.

For those that miss it, despite the fact that there was very little Z4M discussion, a new site has been set up where some of the old members are graduating.

www.m3torque.co.uk

The fate of the original site is still up in the air it would seem but I wouldn't be too hopeful of it coming back.

dgm, nice link.

What I can't weigh up is why the site just had to die, it's a bit similar to when Z4um went although at that time Z4ce had other things on his mind. If you can't be bothered with the hassle of running the forum any more, and I can see how it happens, why not pass on the reins to someone else. Just doesn't make sense, and is grossly unfair on those who have contributed.

There will be more to it. I run a Renault Megane forum/club and we get nothing but support from Renault never mind hassle to close down!

It was a bloody awful site anyway so no great loss!

Can't agree with that, for me it was the best M site to be found. There was a lot more to it besides the car side of it as well.

Totally agree with you Mike.

As someone who has just started their own forum (not car related, it's a pharma industry forum) and am only 3 weeks in I already know how much work is going to be involved and how reliant on the users you are for the success or failure of the site. It's a shame to suddenly lose all that contribution and I am sure someone else could take it on.

Then again, I guess we don't know all the facts about why it closed.
