Mtec discs, rusting although "coated"

Ok,

So I recently put some Mtec grooved & dimpled 325mm discs on to go with my front brake upgrade. Rather than paint the hub and edge area, and faff around with masking tape etc, I paid the £14 additional cost for the "protective coating" which apparently is;

UV resistant
Brake Fluid resistant
Hard wearing
High anti corrosion properties
Hi gloss finish

So, I was a little surprised earlier on to see the discs looking like this;

Has anyone else had this happen when it's not supposed to? I suppose there is always the possibility that they haven't coated mine after machining...

Have emailed them and await a response.

Other than that, they do stop VERY well :)

Nope mine are still nice and rust free. Really pleased with them TBH.

How long have yours been on ?

2 weeks.. And the car is garaged.

Wow mine have been on 12 months and it lives outside, they still look as good as the day I fitted them, even the face doesn't seem to rust up as quickly as some disks I've seen.
I would like to think they will replace them for you.

Wow mine have been on 12 months and it lives outside, they still look as good as the day I fitted them, even the face doesn't seem to rust up as quickly as some disks I've seen.
I would like to think they will replace them for you.

I don't have the 'special' coating though.

Not happy,

Spoke to them this morning, and they reckon I didn't put the protective coating on the order. Just been back on their mobile website, it would appear that there is some sort of bug whereby, if you add in the "free" 500ml brake fluid AND then add the "new10" discount, the site removes anything other than pads & discs from the order!

I know I should have checked the total, but I just clicked on Paypal checkout, and they DON'T send you an email confirmation of order, which if they had, I'd have noticed that the coating was not on there, and could have contacted them to amend.

Really not happy about this, so it looks like I'll be getting MORE silver caliper paint :(

I suggested that they look at this problem, but TBH they didn't sound too concerned..

Just a heads up to double check your orders. Surely it's not too much to ask to get a confirmation email? Also I was surprised upon receipt of my order to see that there was no invoice or order confirmation in there, again something that would have highlighted the omission..

Poor setup to say the least..

Me and a mate both purchased discs from mtec at the same time. His were non coated whilst mine were coated.

His ones now look just like your ones, so I'd say yours haven't been coated.

Mine are still clean and silver in colour.

Looks like I'm a little late to the party here :lol: nevertheless, either get the coating on the discs or paint them before fitting.
 
I've always given the mtec discs I've fitted to my last 3/4,cars a coat of silver hammerite paint & never had any problems. some of the alloy wheel cleaners around destroy any coatings applied.
 
Ducklakeview, I will paint mine to try to avoid the problem you've had. Just a question, should I paint the front surface where the wheel mounts onto the rotor, or cover it with copper grease? I think I painted the ones that are on now (the OEM ones), but have read about the wheels 'binding' to the rotor where it's metal on metal, and it can be hard to get the wheel off.
 
I will only paint the very edge of the disc where it's unswept by the pad, and also the "sides" of the hub where it is at 90 degrees to the wheel mating face. I won't paint the wheel mating face, just a spattering of anti seize around the central mounting spigot.

Did my fronts at the weekend using Hycote Caliper Spray (£7 odd) three coats, dried with heat gun in between. This pic today (forgot to take some as doing it) These are nicely cured after some erm, spirited driving yesterday and today.

You mustn't get any paint on the mating surface or will throw the wheel out of true and balance and have all sorts of issues. If you do use copper grease it should be the lightest film. None on the thread though.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind with the new rotors. The existing ones only have a couple of coats of caliper paint on them - can't see how that would put wheel balance out, but will err on the side of caution for the new ones.
