MTB Hydraulic Calipers - Choosing Help Required

That's the problem a11y with the slightly better ones, the rears seem to be out of stock everywhere. :headbang:

I'll try and source a pair of those though, thanks for your help :)
 
Hi,

I mainly ride DH so have a set of Avid codes my DH rig and they are awesome. I do however have a set of elixirs on my hardtail and these provide more than enough stopping power for that, even used them whilst waiting for spares on the codes on the dh rig and they performed admirably, so at that price I would go for it. Bleeding them is a bit of a ballbag but buy the proper kit and it doesn't take too long.

I've got a hatred of Avid brakes - just don't like the feel of them compared to Shimano/Formula. My most recent purchase arrived with Elixir R's and I removed and sold them before even turning a wheel! I have tried Codes though and IMO only Shimano Saints beat them for power - utterly ridiculous amount of power.

But on the other hand I know lots of folk that don't hate Avid brakes :D

So it's a personal thing rather than the fact they are shite and give lots of problems.

If I can get through tomorrow OK I might hold off, otherwise I will probably order. I'm guessing they will feel a lot better than the mech ones I've already got and not having used Shimano Won't know any different. On the flip side of that the gears are Shimano Deore so from and OCD point of view it would be nice for them to match. IF only I could get the M596's at a decent price. 19 weeks is a long time to wait. :cry:
 
Very much personal preference yes. Never had any major problems with avid and have used them solidly for 7 years, so much so I would absolutely buy again over any other brand.

However other fellow riders swear by hope or formulas. Shimano seem to have their act together these days too.

I run some Shimano XT brakes with the ice tech rotors. 180/160 on a marin hardtail.

A very big improvement on my old Avid Juicy 3's which had a habit of rubbing or going spongy.

As a bonus they look nice and shiney too :)
 
Well although today was very muddy but not raining my bike was dirtier. The brakes however did not clog so I will hold out for the Shimano's for the minute.

I have avids they work fine. But the best breaks i have ever had where haynes on my DH bike years ago b4 i got scared of hurting myself and got a mortgage. They where a bit agricultural but worked great and never had any problems. Forum bike ride would be great :) I live in Oxfordshire so have to drive for a bike ride any way. I have not turned a wheel in ager on my bike for over a year. So you might have to wait for me at the top of the hills!!!!

Nice vid. When in August was that filmed? I ask as I was there 4 days (11/12th and again on 25/26th) riding the DH tracks - I'm one of the volunteer bike patrollers up there and it's not often you see weather like that :lol:

 
My commuter has cable disc brakes... avid Bb5.... the rear one recently failed. :o took it apart and the ball bearings had corroded so they weren't working :(

For speed i just put some a bb7 caliper on the front and put the old front bb5 on the back.

I always find chain reaction cycles to be a good deal, dunno if they have the brakes you are after though...
