MSport Steering wheel question for the ‘doer-uppers’…

So I now have surplus E85/E86 MSport steering wheel, but with worn leather, it has worn through in places.

My options are to;

Buy a MeWant cover, cover it and sell it on
Buy a furniture clinic steering wheel repair kit, try and refurbish and sell it on
Sell it on as it is

I’m trying to recoup as much as I can within reason, but the first two options obviously involve cost and effort/time

Any thoughts?

Probably depends on what you want for it as is versus what you think you'd get repaired.

It’s more that I’d probably get peanuts as it is really.

Mewant cover is £34. Will you get at least that much more if you fit one?

I think I might, yes. However, I not really sure what I’d get ‘before’ or ‘after’ :?

I’ve been watching a few leather wheel restoration video’s on you tube and some of the kits look decent. Similar cost to the Mewant cover though, so swings and roundabouts.

A picture paints a Thousand words (and all that!)

I’ve cleaned it up, and there’s less wear / less severe than I though. Weird ingrained patches of ‘god knows what’ that cleaned off leaving clean leather underneath, so zero wear on the back.

I’m actually veering towards a leather refurbishment kit I think, seen some excellent results on YouTube.

I think I’d struggle to get £70-£80 as it is, but refurbished or covered maybe £150… there’s not exactly many for sale.

I had a mewant cover on mine before I went down the royals route and it looked and felt fine imo. Not a patch on royals mind you.

Yes, for £30 I’m more than happy with it! No plans to change. 03A69059-567F-4178-BFC7-8C88EF81A12E.jpeg

Looks good

I’d probably forgo the centre stripe to aid resale, but it’s a nice finish. I’d only be doing it to get decent value back on the MSport wheel.

How's the trim? Mine was in rough shape. With a little vinyl wrap you could sell it for much more.

Pretty cheap but also pretty time-consuming and the clips on the trim are extremely fragile...

What actually makes it a m sport steering wheel compared to standard?

Standard has silver trim. Less padding/thickness. M-sport is thicker and matte black trim with an "M" logo on the bottom spoke. Finally M steering wheels have tri-color stitching and Nappa leather. Maybe they are all Nappa. I'm not 100% sure though.

Both the M and M-sport use nappa leather, as do most modern BMW steering wheels (since roughly 2000).

The standard steering wheel might actually be fake leather, I’m not entirely sure. While cleaning it up thoroughly I never got it quite to the same level of softness and smoothness you’d expect from the real deal. Anyone know more about this?

On my particular 53 plate 3.0i vin decoder I have,
S255A sports leather steering wheel.
Which if you look at pre facelift 3.0 options list photo seems to be standard fitment.
Not so on later models non 3.0 l which you pay extra for.Msport wheel is standard on sport si models.
As far as I can see.
