Mr 12 Volt MMI MOST box, glitch problem solved !

Weird…I downloaded it and burn it two days ago…

I see my s/w and Bluetooth versions are older but the h/w revision is the same?

Date of system shows shows August 2021 when I bought the box in May 2022..

Software update video released a few days ago....

https://youtu.be/obgdTE8O9pQ

Where do you get the download from ?

Ignore that you have to email them to get it..

Hopefully less buggy..

The Chinese after 5 days of intense and at times banal discussions and with an overwhelming weight of evidence have thrown in the towel and will replace the unit. :headbang:

I doubted they would plus I’m under time pressure so I ordered a parallel unit…. :tumbleweed:

So one way or another I should bottom this out plus then I can sell a brand new unit as tested and proved

In the meantime..doubtful of getting a resolution I bought a second Mr 12 Volt box to sort things out one way or another…

So box arrived today and plugged it in…

No video glitches ..some strange failures on audio handover when flipping between native Bluetooth media streaming and onboard CD and CarPlay…but I’ll sort that out..

Software has been updated and in the process there is now no opportunity to remove the Mr12 Volt boot logo and replace it with a BMW logo….heh ho..

Looks like I’ll have a brand new MMI box to sell if anyone’s interested ?

I had a MMI box fitted a while back that had similar issues, removed it, replugged it, software updated it over and over again but a the end of the day its a box of chinky tricks and mine went in the bin. Mine was not from Mr 12 volt but i would put money on it being identical inside.
If I was going down this route again I would be swapping out the old 1980 style screen for the upgraded android versions

Most these things coming from China are made in just a handful of factories if that but have multiple sellers on Aliexpress / Alibaba, some claim to be factories but are not. Those android boxes are not without their problems either.

Yes I know I own a dropshipping store.
The android screens have a lot better reliability than the MMI boxes, not aware of an android 'box' though, do you know of one?

The boxes are not identical for several different reasons..

Incremental hardware iteration for one..subsequent models use later, with experience, better specified components and revised chipsets

Mr 12 Volt uses the MOST bus which is unique amongst all the other MMI boxes in using optical digital audio connections.

Buying through a UK represented company in the case of Mr 12 Volt does give you rights, albeit maybe slowly actioned.

In my case I got a new unit FOC in the end.

The screen in fact was first used in 2009 so it’s not a 1980 design.

I looked at the android screens but if I had a choice I’d still go with idrive.

Epilog..

After several weeks off from my eye op starting to get going in the garage..

Decided to play around with the MMI MOST box start up screen that can no longer be changed in the latest release and has the Mr 12 Volt splash screen.

So uploaded a 1280*480 splash screen of my own and also replaced the Mr 12 Volt Icon in the apps screen with a tasteful BMW logo..

If folks want a detailed how to ..let me know..

Will start buttoning up the interior steadily now..

Siri with the MMI box seems to work in the quiet of the garage using theMMI mic which I hid next to the OE mic inside the top part of the steering wheel shaft cover..

Did you extend the MicroSD to be accessible for firmware updates?

No..because in theory you are supposed to disconnect the main power connector and MOST connection as part of the firmware upgrade…so the remote access to the micro SD card is not your only issue…hopefully the product is now ‘mature’ so it won’t now need any firmware updates…we will see.. :tumbleweed:

That looks really smart, B21. Modernised and loving the splash screen.

Yes I’m very pleased with the result…best of both worlds..keeps the classy cabin looking clean…whilst offering all you need as a driver in terms of 21st century navigation, driver support and media capabilities.

As a driver you are not overloaded with pretty , but pretty irrelevant graphics and data presentation.

In our aircraft we had the full flight deck symbology with speed tapes etc..however in an emergency you couldn’t beat the three old fashioned round dials to give you an instant relative and absolute picture..

Also unlikely to date badly as the CarPlay interface is merely a gateway through to your phone..as the phones get more capable the user interface lets those capabilities flow through.

Never been a fan of Alexa/Siri for normal information gathering as they are too limited in their actions…however for a car bouncing along, barely in control keeping both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road it’s got to be a good thing.

The mic integration under the steering cowling is pretty neat. I can attest to the usefulness of Siri in the car, it works pretty well under most circumstances even top down going along the motorway I have had success.

Yes profound apologies for the yukky mess with the heat gun glue..it was almost impossible to get the gun in with the angle and the fact that the top trim can’t easily be extracted…in the end glued the mic with gel super glue to the aluminium boss of the steering mount..

Hi Peter, if you still have the new one for sale and it includes free fitting by you, I'll have it, the stripping and fitting looks like an absolute nightmare.

Hi - you offered to provide insights into how you changed the Home Icon in carplay. I've managed to change the boot screen, but not the icon yet. Any help would be much appreciated!
