Right guys n gals, important information.....
If you have an original second generation box (Blue metal = Gen 1, Black plastic = Gen 2, Blue plastic = Gen 3, Grey plastic = Gen 4) then I'd seriously recommend NOT doing this update at this time.
Having followed the instructions, to the letter, my box is currently "Bricked"!! It's just constantly stuck on the opening splash screen, and will not go any further.
I'm now in conversation with Mr12volt to rectify this, but so far no luck. I'll update this as soon as I can.

i have always had real trouble updating mine anyway. i follow the instructions but it just doesn't do anything.

Normal updates are performed through the micro SD (EDIT** NOT USB) slot, and need to be the only thing on the card, I've never had an issue this way.
This particular update though requires to be done through the USB port with a memory stick, again nothing else to be on the stick, just the update files to the root.

Is it not a micro sd slot you’re referring too?🤔

Dave. are we expecting future updates to be done through the USB port rather than the micro SD card for future releases? Its a real pain having to take the trim off to update the FW. I have not been able to update the firmware since its been in, i am still on the version shipped with the device.

If your unit is working fine for your setup then don't worry about the updates, it's only to fix certain issues. I keep mine updated, but not because I need to just for making sure I'm aware of them.
As for updates through the USB, this is for certain types only, normal updates are still through the Micro SD slot.

for the most part, it does work fine. but i get fairly regular lock ups, where is have to hold the button in to restart it.

You installed it for me, its behind the heater controls.
Arrr, yeah I've now stopped putting it there. Originally you needed access directly to the box to update it, so a good fit was in that location, and that extender wouldn't help as you'd still need to get to the box. Now though you can update without direct access, so the extra work involved in putting it on top of the glovebox enables you to use the extender and no need to remove any panels. So it could be moved to the glovebox top and the extender fitted and updated that way, but for the sake of the once in a while update it's possible not worth it now. Up until this latest issue with the latest ios there hasn't been an update in over a year.

Update on my box issue regarding the update.

Basically it's bricked and looks like there is no solution to remedy this! Mr12volt haven't come up with any solution whats-so-ever, apart from using a different memory stick and reformatting etc, the sort of stuff I'd do anyway and have tried. They also haven't even bothered to open my last message to them on 1st December. To say that I'm an affiliate of theirs as well, although I wouldn't expect any better treatment anyway, and I still can't get an answer isn't good at all.
I now have no choice other than to rip it all out and chuck it in the bin as e-waste :headbang:

That's very very bad and sad as we had all blown their trumpet on quality of support..have you tried flaming them on their FB page!-:)

Well it's not all bad, I have an update to come shortly which is good news. I'll post that when I can/once it's sorted.

But upon conversation with them I wouldn't recommend to update the box if you have the black version like I do (thats this iPhone17 issue update, via a memory stick and not an update the normal way). So that's only boxes prior to when I fitted mine, as they released the 3rd generation box (pale blue) just one week after I got mine (hence why my video was never used by them).

Based on my previous other experience with maintaining legacy versions of things with embedded o/s or firmware it’s often tricky to apply updates to current problems with old kit…I guess they never tested it..glad you’re getting sorted..
