Dont know if any one would know why this is happening but my car has gone from doing around 35/37mpg on a motorway run down to about 26mpg not doing anything different and the car still averages 25mpg in town driving, its a 2.0i sport 2007
 
we lose three mpg for a cold engine in winter

So I open the guessing with a thermostat problem but it sounds worse than that.

I have also noticed that the MPG drops alot in cold weather, way more than 3 MPG, its more like 10! I've been keeping an eye on my tyre pressures and they seem fine. I have changed to Vreds from the original run flats for the softer ride.
In summer i was getting a stable 42 MPG on my 32 mile round trip to work on the run flats.
I'm now running summer Vreds in wintery conditions and im getting 28 MPG on the same journey.
The car is low mileage at 18,000 and has recently been serviced (inspection 1) so i dont think there could be any engine condition efficiency loss going on.
I would be really interested in opinions as to why the OP and myelf are seeing a massive drop in fuel efficiency over winter.
 
maybe individual short trips in the cold make more difference than 3 mpg but our trip computer for mainly 7mile rural journeys on hilly b roads is consistent, summer 37.2-36.7- and winter 35.7. *(actually only 2+mpg) tyres are all at 34psi all round

I agree with you, your mpg is surprisingly poor.
 
Assuming you're not driving very different trips to your normal ones...

As per Jamie W's comment, check the tyre pressures. Also check you don't have a binding disc/seized caliper, make sure the handbrake is releasing properly, check the air filter etc.

Don't really go into cities and large towns apart from the occasional visit to my daughter's house in Cambridge. Mostly A/B roads for leisure purposes with sensible driving and a light foot that's why a 6 pot would be wasted on me.The air con is on all the time when the roof is up as it mists up if I don't have it on. It is actually more economical that my Series 1 which has only 5 gears and is a lot heavier than the Zed.
 
Anything less than 40 mpg in a 2.0 on a motorway and I'd suspect an issue? Unless you're going faster than speed limit :thumbsup:
 
Sorry not much help in answering the original question but thought I'd add to the topic.
I've recently purchased a 2003 3.0i auto, I get about 25 mpg on my daily commute (9 miles of mixed roads) and 34 mpg at legal (ish) motorway speeds.
Does this seem about right?
 
I did around 36k in my 2.0 over 2 years, 80 mile round trip to work and back every day mixed heavy traffic for first / last 5 miles then motorway - averaged consistent 42 mpg

Persistent very cold weather has a big impact on mpg on short journeys though and it's been very cold for a few weeks now :cry:
 
ive only just got my 2.0l and so far ive managed 125 miles on half a tank! im hoping the cold weather is something to do with it as i was expecting alot more, my old TT managed 25mpg! with no turbo and lighter car i thought this would be more efficient
 
I've struggled to get much more than 30 out of mine, so last week on a trip down to Sussex I disciplined myself to stay at 70/75mph all the way. Result 38mpg. Until i got to the M25, that is. What a crap road, would hate to live down there! Overall mpg after crawling around the M25, stop/start, was 35. Still OK, I guess.
