MPG in 6th @ 2000rpm

I did the same move from 3.0 roadster to Z4MR, MPG is a fair bit worse and I get approximately 75 miles to a quarter of a tank. MPG has been between high teens (weekend blast) to 29MPG cruising to the Wales run down the motorway at 70-80mph.

The fuel tank does certainly feel smaller now

The cars just had its DME flashed to the latest code so I will be interested to see if that changes anything, that said its a much nicer car than an early 3.0 both in build quality, noise and drive.

OT: What is this new DME software? What does it do? How will I know if it's already installed?

There is a thread detailing some stumbling issues when the throttle is opened briefly from idle. Whilst my car has been in for other warrantee work I asked it to be investigated.

No sensor or diagnostic issues were found but we agreed that trying a software fix by flashing the DME (engine management computer) to the newest version code would be a wise thing to do. I'm told this has made the car "much better" I'll be the judge when I pick it up...

No idea how you can check your DME version without a laptop, odb2 lead and software.

Filled up this morning (Momentum 99) drove 140miles mostly motorway at between 50-60mph (really really boring!) range now says 290miles (430miles from a tank projected if I continued driving in this way) - I will let someone else work out the mpg (I could care less!) :)

Why did I do it? Had to travel to Tunbridge Wells for work - Couldn't be asked to do it in the 120D (already done over 800miles in that this week!) so took the M - With the company being really stingy with my pence per mile rate I thought I would conserve fuel...

Whilst it was really reall really boring it was nice just being in the M, and seeing others eye-balling my car as they went passed (yes, lorries overtook me too!)

Got quite a few nods & thumbs ups :D

Is the build quality really different? I hadn't expected any change in build quality after the facelift as I thought it was pretty much the same car other than the engine, bumper and lights.

How much of the ride improvement is from:
a) non-runflat tyres on M
b) fixed hard roof on coupe
c) possible different suspension set-up on M

How noticable was the change in engine performance? Reasonable? A massive difference? It all obviously comes to personal circumstances but I just don't know if I could ever justify the extra cost of running an M over a standard 3.0. Especially a 3.0si if I was to get one of those.

In my Z4M Roadster, the best I've ever done over about 300km at 90km/h (56 mph) is 8.9l/100km (26.4mpg) with the roof up and 10.0l/100km (23.5mpg) with the roof and windows down. Both on cruise control on a relatively flat surface at temperatures around 10 to 20C, measured by fuel added as opposed to the OBC.

oo7ml, did it today for four miles, got just over 40mpg, slightly downhill, but driving normally. mmm-five is right, speed is about 53 on the speedo, bit less in reality.

40mpg... how did you achieve that considering everyone else seems to be getting a max of 30mpg :)

Two things, this was only over four miles and it was limited to about 53mph and the others are going faster than that. But it shows what is possible.

My average is anywhere between 18 and 25 depending on how I'm driving.

Pretty sure I'd still not get 40mpg at 53mph in 6th.. :| Will try this to be sure next time I get mine out.

Convinced an earlier DME version exists with a richer mixture in early cars.. whether to pursue it with the dealer or pay for an Evolve map considering other mods..

& a range of 430 is just crazy, I've done whole tanks of slow driving & 350 is about the best I've had.

Reckon you'd be better off in 5th at 53mph, possibly labouring the engine in 6th?
2000rpm is not labouring the S54 at all.

However, I had a 116D the other week and considering the torquey nature of a diesel I was surprised how often I was changing down for corners where I don't have normally have to change down.

OK in case you buy an ///M on the back of what I've said, I did the exact return journey today, it is more uphill than I thought at first, and in a strong headwind I only got 25mpg.

:o

So I reckon driving at those kind of speeds you would get maybe max 30mpg as a long term average. But any stop/start at the end of that journey would put a big hole in that.

Thanks... i won't be buying an M on the basis of poor MPG, they are not supposed to be economical cars... i bought an MKV R32 a few weeks ago until the right car (M or Cayman pops up)... i am not planning on keeping the R32 for long... i'm getting 19MPG on trips where i was getting 35MPG on my 3.0 Z4 so i'm getting used to the poor MPG...

I just returned from an 800 mile trip where I got an average of 27.1 miles per US gallons. If my math is correct that is about 32 miles per imperial gallon.

Wow! I've had my 3.0 z4 for 5 years and only ever hit 30 mpg on the odd clear motorway run. My daily commute in to town shows an average of 22 mpg, but I leave the house at 6 am so there is hardly any traffic. how did you manage 35?!

my previous car before the z4m was an R32 DSG, had it for three years and no way was it thirstier than the z4m, im getting about 21mpg on the 20mile trip to work, was getting 28-30mpg out of the golf. :x
