Hi guys, this is my first post so hopefully i will stick to the rules.....

Ok, I have had a look through the posts but i am unable to find a clear answer.
I have a 54 Z4 and I would like to play MP3s. Now I found that about this time they were puting in mp3 compatabile players. Now after about 6 disk I have found mine is just not compatabile. I have tried the discs and got the one to work in his 06 z4. So my question is this, if i want to play mp3s (not bothered about ID3 tags) do i need to replace the cd changer or the head unit or both.

Thanks guys and gals.

my 03 does'nt seem to play mp3 but my 54 one series did and 55 x3 does i also thought mine would have in the z the x3 player looks like it will interchange

Welcome

You need a post-facelift headunit - cheaper and easier than replacing the changer unit (more fiddly than anything else I'm led to believe). Apparently the headunit is black rather than the grey-ish colour, so ideally you need to replace the centre airvents too.

Its something I've thought about putting into my 54-plate but I'm managing fine without one for the moment.

You need a 2005 model but as cars tend to sit around for a while this would mean an 05 plate at the earliest. I had a May 05 registered car but without MP3.

so just changing the changer wont work, I have to get a new head unit. Is there any difference between 54 and the later editions?

why not get a dension or intravee, just as cheap and will look better as hidden, so you wont have a black radio when everything else is grey.

I used a Dension IceLink Plus for 3 years in my old 3 series before transplanting in the Z4 which didnt have a display at the time, and it give you the ID3 tags through the Standard Business head unit.

Dont think you can get that now but believe the Dension Gateway 100 is very similar in perfoemance.

Now I have Nav I would go for the Intravee as this I beleive has even better audio navigation but not sure how usable without Nav.

You could change just the changer (to one that plays MP3 discs obviously) but apparently it's a mega job removing all the trim, etc to access the changer - it's well and truely integrated into the car :x otherwise it'd be my option too.

It's not to bad a job, but there are better alternatives these days, and a few members have reported problems with changers jamming.

I have brand new a MP3 changer in mine only used for one week before fitting dension, but would want good money for it as I really cant be bothered to take it out.
