mp3 3.5mm Jack socket upgrade price - £220?!

Have heard you can get a 3.5mm jack socket in the glovebox or just under the temperature gauges on the dash. My Z4MR doesn't have it - I want the under dash option.

Just called local BMW dealer for price - £220!! :o They are really taking the mickey with this one. A 3.5mm socket like this in Maplin costs 40p, yet he told me they charge £35 plus VAT - daylight robbery! Its just an aux socket on a cable although I appreciate they have to program aux into the computer as an option.

Has anyone else had this done cheaper and/or done it themselves?

Yours must be a 2006 then as it was standard in 2007 onwards.

Installation is 20 minutes tops, parts from the dealer includes the cable required and the connector to insert in the back of the radio.

ouch £220! muppets... check out the AUX_DIY thread in the How-To section.

real easy and takes 20-30 minutes, cost of the lead I got was £50...

You can make one for a few pound. All you need is a mountable mini jack socket, some wire(mobo wires are great as the connectors fit perfect in the back of the radio), a couple capacitors and a resistor.

part cost about £30 from the dealer for me and I did it in 20mins too, also a 2006 Z4MR.

read that whole thread - there's some daunting stuff but it's all there and when you get down to it, it's very easy indeed.

Mine's a 2004. Didn't need any programming. Just plug it in and the aux menu came up itself when cycling through CD and radio.

Easy to do and even easier if you do what I did and have the cable in the ashtray. That meant no drilling and the cable can be hidden in the ashtray when not in use. Very easy mod so don't you go paying £220 for it.

I got a similar price from a car radio specialist for a USB/jack socket
Trouble is my 2003 does not play mp3

Is there a upgrade head unit available. I bought a new radio/cd for my truck which has a usb socket and that was about £80 and the bloke from Halfords fitted it free as it was a staight swap.

thanks

eh? The cable from BMW fits all headunits in our cars and costs £50 and is easy to fit. Doesnt matter whether you headunit can play mp3 or not it is being played by your mp3 player be it ipod or not. Car headunit simply acts as posh headphones :D

what I meant was I put my mp3 music on a memory stick and plug it into the usb port on my player in the truck

the head unit in my z4 does not play mp3 discs so won't play mp3 on usb presumably therefore I would need an mp3 player

much easier with the memory stick imho

ah I see, then I dunno... guess you could buy a standard head unit with USB like you did for the truck, but you would then need the facia adaptor and maybe wiring adapters etc...

The jack socket upgrade we're on about is a simple jack socket to connect any audio source you like. It isn't usb or anything flashy.
