Moving up to an E89, which one?

Hi folks, I’ve had a 3.0si for about six months. It’s a great car and the engine is to die for, unfortunately at six five it’s a bit of a squeeze for me in terms of leg room. I changed the seats to non standard and that didn’t help massively, anyway I’ve tested an E89 and there’s more space in the cockpit. So I’ve decided to upgrade and will be looking at around a 15-17k spend on a second hand model, hopefully with relatively few miles, what do people think re the best model to go for?

Any advice, tips great fully received.

Regards

Chris

Hi, depends what you’re looking for I spose? For instance the 2litre turbo cars get better mpg, cheaper tax, and are mappable to give more power than the 3.0si :?
Or you can go straight six twin turbo for a bit more shove & a nicer sound :driving:
Can always get an earlier e89 and stick with the engines you’re familiar with.

Certainly a healthy budget , as for which one ? I would try 3 of the possibles then consider your options . 2.0i single turbo , 3.0i na & 35i or is twin turbo .
You have a auto now , will you want the same again as there are 3 different boxes on offer with 89s , manual , auto & DCT .

Try the 28i. I test drove one last year and was very impressed. Didn't have the sound of a six cylinder but lacked for nothing else in my view. There's an auto one coming into a dealership soon with an amazing spec and super low miles that's within your budget https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/201710160352261?quoteref=2cee044e-66b3-4eeb-8e04-a503e3a334c7

Reason i didn't mention the 28i specifically is simply price , , in truth they offer little over a 2.0i yet consistently list for a good lump more on equivalent spec-year-miles :? Or that's what i found in the few months i was hunting earlier in the year :? most likely due to those not in the know assuming they are getting the next engine up in the range with the 28i name & therefore prepared to pay that bit more ??

Hi I just bought a 3.0i E89 sounds amazing , goes like stink & looks fab , 42,000 miles , full history , manual .
I would try the manual it is a very slick box , although my other 2 cars are auto , you can't beat manual on a sports car !

The op specifically wants an auto, keep up at the back! :poke:

Well I think the key point is to understand your priorities

How many miles you planning to drive per year
Is cost of owning an issue
Whats more important sound vs MPG
Its this a weekend toy or Daily Driver

Since having a 28i for over three years, its a sensible choice, it frugal fairly quick, and better handling than most E89's with M Sports suspension.

However, I am considering upgrading to a straight 6, as I miss the sound - and wanting more power

All valid points, and whilst it's simple to chip a 20i to deliver the same output of a 28i (and more) there are a lot of purist buyers who prefer to buy something that's unmodified or, buyers that are not in the know and buy the badge, which might make it easier to sell on. Nevertheless, the example I put in a link to is an auto, an M Sport model, lots of extra kit besides and is 6 years old with less than 8k miles on the clock that's within the OP's budget. Not too many like that about I'd guess

They are certainly a pretty rare model & no reason at all not to buy one , it was simply the ask prices when i was looking that left me thinking some sellers pitch them closer to twin turbo money than 20i money & for me it was never gonna happen

Sorry to disagree but when you drive a DCT you will see you can beat a manual on a sports car very easily.

Sounds like a simple choice with the budget you have 35i or 35is

Its not all about that though is it ? There is no question a DCT 35is would clear all other Zs off the park from the lights but once that part is over what's left ? A very competent all rounder that leaves owner detached from a "sports" car that already struggles to give the driver any real feedback or connection  nothing wrong or right with DCT or manual or auto for that matter , a buyer has to make his own choice then live with it

Couldn't agree more but I am biased

Very True, Twin Scroll does not work - its an old name from my 335i days.

However, its just as quick as an twin turbo :fuelfire:
