Well, it only seems like 5mins since I put my trusty e85 up for sale & bought a low mileage e89
My new car lasted all of 4weeks before terminal gearbox maladies set in, despite the traders insistence it seems he isn't able to repair so I'm getting my money back tomorrow (hopefully)
I liked the e89 so will be looking for another, fingers crossed the next one lasts longer than 19k :roll:

Hi Chris, I'm no gearbox expert but it started jumping out of 3rd gear 3 weeks into ownership & this was accompanied by really nasty cog knashing sounds. Because it only happened a few times in a week I thought it may have been down to sloppy shifting so I took extra care & also got my cousin to give it a go :?
Well it wasn't my driving & things got worse pretty quickly, it also spread to 2nd gear
My indi reckons it's knackered syncros which seems pretty rare on these cars, bmw won't supply spares for the gearboxes & a replacement is getting on for £4k (plus fitting)
Because of the low mileage of the car I wasn't prepared to accept a scrapyard box on my pride & joy, it seems to have left the trader in a corner, with the offer of a refund being made last week (paid tomorrow allegedly)
I'm lucky I can afford to buy another zed without waiting for the money back but had to wait in case the car ended up being returned to me (I don't want 2 zeds again)
I've seen a local car almost exactly the same with 17k on it that I'm looking at on Sunday but I'm also toying with a later model 2litre turbo?
Not 100% sure what direction to move in to be honest, it's been a stressful few weeks for me with my poor mum in hospital after a bad stroke & this is the last thing I needed to happen.
I'm hoping for happier times in 2017

Interesting. And as you say, quite rare. Manual gearboxes are usually bulletproof unless theyve been subject to careless high-speed downshifts etc.
Your trader's going to take a massive hit refunding you and surprised he didnt offer to replace with a new gearbox?
Going to cost him more in the end to fix and resell if thats his plan.

I don't think he knew, it drove fine until 3 weeks in :driving:
The warranty only paid up to £2k & a new box from bmw is approx £4K
He tried offering a deal where I paid for half the cost of repair but after only 4 weeks I wasn't going to put my hand in my pocket so I politely declined :wink:

Chris I bet the retailer is going to get a secondhand box and resell, it wont cost him anymore than it would had Rob been prepared to accept a secondhand replacement box. Hardest part will be finding a new buyer and explaining why the car went to a new owner for one month (if the V5 is checked by the buyer). On the face of it the trader seems a decent sort, a lot would have sourced a secondhand box and just told the customer its been repaired by a specialist. Surprised a local gearbox guru cant fix this, OK BMW don't supply the parts but surely there's plenty of others suppliers for gearbox bits and pieces. My mate who has his own garage recently referred a customer to a gearbox specialist for a syncro issue on 6th gear on a 2011 320d. They managed to sort it for them but I have no idea where they get their parts from etc. I was surprised to hear of a BMW with gearbox issues like this only to be told that the more modern BMW's aren't as bullet proof when it comes to gearbox's and rear diffs as earlier cars. You live and learn!

Thanks Mack, funny enough I never received the v5 so I contacted dvla today & they never got it from the trader!
Speaking to the trader later on, he told me he had cancelled the log book :? Sounds as though they never sent it to me?
I cut off his escape route by insisting I wouldn't accept a salvage yard box & if "fixed" I wanted supporting paperwork proving the repair & warranty on said repair-that's when his "fix" started to go cold.
