Moving on from Z ownership...

As a mater of interest what was the biggest discount offered to you on a ///M

My local dealer sent out a test offering a cancelled ///M with over £6k discount.

I also got £7k off my 2.5si sport as it was pre registered.
£13k off a 6 month old car, still not enough to convince me though unfortunately.

I looked quite seriously at the AMG SLK. Very very nice, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I do worry about whether the car will have any soul though :?
The AMG is a complete beast, a different proposition altogether, would have loved one of them :sweetheart:

I think you're right about the lack of soul though - a better bet as a daily car, but on the occasions when you want to go for a blast, it will prove less satisfying than an ///M.

Hey guys,

I got the SLK delivered today :D

First - the bad news! Whilst it doesn't appear any lower then the Z, I have managed to put a fair-sized crack in the front bumper earlier today, after doing about 5 miles in it, must be a record

Apart from that minor mishap, first impressions are excellent. It's my first automatic car, and the box is really slick with changes. Stick it in S mode and it holds the gears well, seems to know when you want to hold a gear or change down, and when you want it to change up. If you use the throttle you can generally induce it to do what you want.

The engine is really smooth, and is much quieter than the Z was, especially at idle when the Z's exhaust makes a lovely burble, it sounds really civilised, but when you floor it and hold it through to 6000rpm it makes a great howl along with some beautiful exhaust music. It pulls harder at the top end than my Z did - from say 40-90 it's rapid, because it has 7 speeds the ratios are a bit closer together, one complaint I had with the Z was that the gearing felt a bit too tall sometimes.

The ride is good too, on 17" wheels and normal tyres it's a lot more compliant than the Z was, although the downside is more roll through the corners, although it doesn't seem to pitch or dive too much when you brake and accelerate. No wonder ditching the run-flats is such a popular mod. The steering is pretty much like the Z with the sport button pressed.

Overall, I don't think there is much between the two, with both cars having their good points. If you are able to have two cars, the Z is the better bet because it's more focused, but if you have only one car and therefore need more of an all-rounder as a daily driver, then the SLK it is.

Congrats on getting the SLK, finally!
Agreed that it must be a record to put a crack in the bumper on the first day. So, what does tomorrow hold? :?

Hopefully a little better track record! :D

Cheers!

Well I thought I'd resurrect this thread after nearly a year of SLK ownership :)

I'm still loving the car, although ever since I got it, one thing has annoyed me about it - it has proven to be a magnet for negative behaviour  whether it's scowls, verbal abuse, chucking stuff, dents, etc. I'm parking it in a city centre car park for the time being and I've come back to it a couple of times to find some scumbags sizing it up then running off after I've arrived. Really annoying, not sure why the SLK is seen like this. I never had any problem in the Z4, only ever got positive comments. Maybe the Merc just looks too expensive?

:scratchhead:

So I have another year on a contract in the city centre, and can't really be bothered spending the next year worrying about whether or not the car is OK. I have been thinking about buying something else for using through the day, but then it's a huge expense laid up doing nothing most of the time, and I think why should I ride round in a POS when I have an SLK.

Anyway, today when I was out I found myself at the BMW dealer having a quick browse. They had a couple of 57 reg 3.0Si inside, so I settled down into a SG/Imola roaster. Ah, nestling back into the M seats, adjusting them as low as they go, reclining the backrest, pulling forward the thigh support and grabbing the chunky M wheel, it was like being at "home" again. It's been said plenty time on here before, but be in no doubt - the M seats are the finest ever. Three showroom cars had 108s on, and all we're in poor condition despite being <8 months old, shame really. Then I started looking at the BMW AUC website to see what was available, and there are some nice cars on there at fairly decent prices.

So anyway, I don't think I'm going to do anything with the SLK, but I really enjoyed the view along the bonnet today. Maybe I'm just still pissed off because of last week (dent/scumbags).

Dammit fella, I thought we'd got you back on board there for a second!!!!! C'mon, you know you want to... you know it makes sense!!!!

Sorry to hear about the scumbags fella, would love to put a dent in one of them!

Thanks for the comments, might be back soon you never know

Rick Hunter, my dream of GT-R ownership is dead. Here in the UK the allocation is sold out for a while. The target market is so limited, that pretty much means that anyone who wants one at £50k+ is already on the list, plus a few speculators too. I reckon that after a brief honeymoon period, the car will lose you £15-20k in a very short space of time.

this weekend I saw a 2007 Cayman S with 7000 miles. $47,500:!:

Aren't those $70,000 new???
