Mounting costs for simple fix

I had some pressure dropping from my passenger side front tyre, so got our friendly mobile tyre man to the office to fix or replace the tyre. Simple job I thought. :(

He looked at it and indeed I had an insanely large screw straight through the tyre. He could have repaired it, however the uneven wear on the tyre pointed to some tracking issues, so he suggested I get the tracking done before he put the new tyre on.

When putting the wheel back on the car he noticed excessive movement of the wheel and said some bushes or other (can't remember now) would need replacing. I then took it to my usual garage who said the wishbone bushes needed replacing.

Once all this was done, I took it to my local tyre centre to get the tracking done. An hour after starting it I had the dreaded "mechanic walks into the waiting room with "that" look on his face". He couldn't do the tracking because the passenger side track rod end had siezed. They had tried everything, brute force, heat, but nothing could shift it. It is now going back in tomorrow for this to be replaced, and then the tracking, so I can finally get my new tyre. This has been a really expensive year for both our cars.

The sooner I sort my new car out the better. Should get it by the end of November if I can find the right one.

Why is nothing simple?

All I wanted was a new tyre :(

Sods law for me also. I hadnt even had a puncture in my life. In the first year of owning a car with 18" 255 tyres i managed to get two. Neither repairable as one was in the sidewall and the other was a hooped nail which made two holes too close to oneanother to be repaired. Typical!

Well dont worry about the track rod end - these tend to be cheap to buy/fit.

I had the same problem recently, bald inner edge on both front tyres meant it cost me two new tyres (which had loads of tread left everywhere else) and full tracking at the main dealer.

The wishbone bushes are a very common BMW problem, might have been worth shopping around for the best price.
