Motorway Valuation

Has anyone had experience with Motorway and how accurate are their valuations?

I have sold two cars via Motorway.
Both were decent prices (for dealers). They were both good cars of their type.
Remember that Motorway just auction your car to the trade and the highest bidder wins.

They will set your expected price that you receive as not realistic high so you go with them, and when it comes to the end of the auction, they try to suggest that the lower price it achieved is actually really good.

I did sell my daughter's car through them a couple of months back, and the money I made through them was significantly higher than the other auction sites (I tried Carwow).

I didn't have that. The suggested price for one car was lower than it achieved and the other was almost spot on.
Admittedly one was sold in late 2021 when the prices were going up hugely. It was the only car I've ever bought that made a profit. I bought it through Ford Direct for £23k. Six months later sold it to a main dealer, via Motorway, for £28.5k. Then of course the next car I bought was more expensive than it was 6 months earlier!

To be fair, it was a Fiat 500 convertible so nothing glamorous, they mentioned 4200 as expected and I got 3600 from them which I still think was great as carwow got only 2700.

The car had been parked on my drive for almost 2 years without moving so I was already amazed it a) started and b) passed an MOT before I sold it.

I was very happy when we sold our 2018 Golf GT with motorway, we got more than either BCA (webuyanycar.com) and the dealer offered in part exchange.

Valuation wise do your own research. Find similar spec/mileage/condition vehicles to yours to gauge what you could achieve.

As both @Pondy and @pvr have said Motorway will basically ask you to take set pictures (via their APP) and also ask you to upload the V5C. State and photo any damages (which they will use to lower the suggested price slightly). They will run a 24hr trade only auction and then let you know what your vehicle achieved. You are perfectly entitled to say thanks but no thanks if it doesn't reach or indeed supersede the suggested estimate. They assume you'll proceed if it does but are not legally bound. If you do proceed an agent will come to inspect the car, report back to the dealer & if 'as described' transfer the money to you on the spot.

I've sold two cars successfully via them. A mint loaded BMW X3 M40i and a near mint Mercedes GLA 250 Premium Plus, near as in I mentioned the tiny stone chip on the windscreen and slight bumper scuff which would have actually polished out.

The X3 was bought by a BMW dealer, collected by an agent, paid for immediately.

The GLA 250 was purchased by an independent dealer. They tried to get more money off citing it needed a new screen and a complete bumper respray :rofl:After I politely declined & asked them to leave they soon agreed to buy at the full auction achieved price. Funny that.

Both times I sold I didn't have any 'negotiations' when they turned up to collect. I did give Motorway more than the required pictures and described them extremely accurately (mainly because I didn't want the bartering at my house).

The only issue I had with the second car was that they had changed their system to be 'app' based only. All my pictures were taken with a camera (not phone as my phone is old and crap). So I had a bit of trouble getting the advert sorted. TBF to them, Motorway were really helpful and sorted it via email.

Thanks all, just curious... every time I get an email the car seems to increase in value

The last car I sold was through Motorway, the highest bidder was the local main dealer group, the local BMW dealer has tried to buy my car twice, the G29 is in demand, especially M40i it costs nothing to ask them. The price will drop in September for sure, then recover in April.

Friend of mine sold a couple of standard cars through them (Hyundai i30, Vauxhall Astra) and achieved more than they quoted him. I sold the Fiesta ST through them and had a lower offer from the dealers than motorway had quoted me by about £800. I then only had £80 knocked off by the dealer after the bloke had turned up and inspected it (he went town on it) though, he discovered the UV coating on the headlights was peeling off on the driver's side. I snapped his hand off and came away with less money than selling privately, but hardly any stress doing so.

I'd use them again, but they do seem to vary based on what the car is and how easy dealers think it is to shift on. Much better than putting it on arsebook marketplace and having a bunch of "will you take £1500 m8?" messages. (We're ~20km from Birmingham in a straight line. Annoying.)

I sold my thundernight M40i through them.

The valuation was unrealistically high by about £3k +/- (which I realised beforehand). However, I went with them anyway and it sold to Sytner for more than I paid for it as an approved used car from Group 1 BMW in January.

So yes, I believe their valuations are high, but if you do your homework you could still be onto a winner.

IMHO Motorway work best for newer cars with all defects notified. I’ve sold 4 through them. The last 3 valuations were reasonable and just after Covid got a lot more, way over the PCP balloon payment.

Recently sold my M40i. A year ago it was coming out at £33K. In July it came out at £36,790. It sold for £36,120 which was much more than I expected. My stealer offered £30K. This for a Misano blue with all packs except the black shadow line. Just serviced. 70 on a private plate with 10,500 miles. It had the OEM wind break and the glass Windschott, plus track pack PPF. There were a few bodywork marks and some small kerbing. No hassle or quibbling from the purchasing dealer. They added approx another £3K IIRC and it sold within 2 weeks. I’d done less than 1,000 miles in the last year. Great car, looked and went well.
