Motorway cameras to catch tailgaters?

It has to work or it'll get thrown out of court
Speed cameras work usually very accurately so you have little defence against being prosecuted, you have a speedometer so have no excuse if over the limit.
You don't have anything to measure the 2 second rule so it'll never happen imo

We're going to need automated driving to avoid being constantly fined in the future. 
There are new road layouts in Newcastle that just don't make sense and can lead you onto a Bus lane with no alternative - I still haven't worked out how it's supposed to work but no doubt a roof mounted camera will point out what I shouldn't be doing

With the sheer number of cars on the motorways there wouldn't be enough tarmac to squeeze them all if there was a 2 second break between them all
Anyone using the M25 , M60 etc at peak times will know how traffic flows like a 40/50mph snake virtually bumper to bumper

Nice little debate.
No one follows the two second rule,
so they would be sending every one on speed awareness courses, if that where the only criteria. I don't drive much on motorways so when I do it's like I'm a learner driver to some degree. I sit there with a safe gap, less than two seconds most of the time and car after car after car fills the gap and I gradually fall back. Not a problem for me I'm pretty thick skinned and it only a couple of times a year I drive on the darn things.

recently a pal pulled over heading into Manchester centre in order to answer his phone safely only to receive a fine through the post for straying/stopping indesignated bus lane 
There's a cracking bus lane scam heading from Bingley to Shipley :thumbsdown: 2 lanes between 9am - 3pm but fined if you stray between 7-30-9am & 3/5-30pm with only the smallest of signs explaining this that can.t be read in the dark

Yep good point , you trundle along with a nice gap then some knob jumps in between that gap just prior to you passing under the camera :!: :!: the number of roadrage incidents could rocket :evil:

I've not studied traffic law but i am pretty sure there isn't a steadfast law you would be breaking by not being 2 seconds behind the car in front. So they would have to prosecute you for dangerous driving or the like i would have thought. Quite happy to be corrected if i am wrong on this

He should have told them he was dropping someone off. I believe your allowed to enter a bus lane to drop/pickup someone etc

Maybe that's why they're saying course attendance at <2 secs and prosecution at <1 sec (easier to prove dangerous driving if you're that close). Still not sure how they can mandate the course though if they can't prove an offence.
When she told me about it I said it didn't sound feasible for all sorts of reasons and nothing that's been posted here is convincing me otherwise.
I suppose they could just be saying it to all the speed awareness attendees just to get it in their heads and get them leaving bigger gaps!
Cynic view: they implement it, 20 million drivers get sent on a course, system fails as not enough courses, govt has inquiry, we fine out the advisor who said it should happen also owns the only company doing the courses, system is dropped but it cost the tax payer 20m, some people got rich from it.

The old saying is "only a fool breaks the 2 second rule", my driving instructor told me this and said the time it takes to say it, is about 2 seconds...unless you talk fast 
I can't see this happening as there are too many idiots that cut in front of you, especially at motorway junctions .

Think you forgot to add "cut in front of you, then straight on the brakes so they don't plough into the car in front!"
