Motorway Boats

I was just browsing on behalf of my Dad, and thought... plenty of enthusiasts on here who will have interesting opinions...

He's always been a fan of big cars, i've seen a few S60 volvos, XKR and XJ Jags, currently riding in a temporary Lexus for work purposes, but looking for something to actually care about. First time ever i've heard him mention 7-series Beemers, Audi A8/S8's and thought uh-oh - i was kinda hoping the new XJ would be on the cards.

Any one have opinions on the best large exec cruiser, with some grunt for backroads and motorways. This car will do a LOT of miles, and need some balance of economy and performance (as in - if its not good MPG, it should be Fast to make up for it..), and i think ride, and therefore air suspension is important. Not entirely sure on budget, i started at around 20k to see what options are.

Some ideas i found:

What would you buy for your big-boat motorway cruiser that makes you grin when you put your foot down?

Forget the rest , if you can afford to buy & run the S8 linked above what are you waiting for ? Epic motorway battering ram  450BHP :o

Audi S8 all day long.... nothing can touch them (imo)

Even the D2 that I have is still an amazing car today, and has more than enough grunt and comfort.

I may be a tad biased mind you...

Hah lovely motor! Yeah i'm a big fan, but the question i guess really is ... is there anything that's almost as good that doesn't rape you on fuel costs.

i also like the look of this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201404012964220

Obviously gotta be a diesel if economy is a consideration. The latest diesels give a great blend of performance and economy.

Out of the two you've linked there, head says Audi, heart says Jag 8)

Agree about VW Phaeton, worth a look, I quite like the Passat CC - friend recently got one and I'm very impressed but probably smaller than what you're after.
