MOT was done twice...

So my car was dropped off for it's MOT at 1pm today at a local test centre. 5pm rolled around so I called asking if everything was OK.

"Well the MOT has been done twice now. once by myself (mechanic) and then again by a VOSA inspector. They surprised us with a centre inspection and he wanted to re-test your car when I had finished."

My response was immediately "Great, so what's it failed on?". "Nothing. He was a bit annoyed as he couldn't find a thing…luckily your car is mint!".

I appreciate that is a boring story but it made my day! Always nice to know. :driving:

Good to hear  Certificate valid for two years now then

Good piece of mind though, knowing all is up to standard.

nice one its happened to my son twice now they really go to town on the car to see if he had missed anything .luckily  not

What if you wait for your car to be done (as I always do), it passes ok and then VOSA turn up wanting to do it again? Can you legally refuse to let them do it again? I know I'd be a brassed off if i had to be somewhere after the MOT and they made me late

Personally I'd be planning the MOT when time was a bit more free incase it fails on a quick job that could be done there and then prior to a quick retest...

To the OP - congratulations on a quick and easy clean pass :)

As far as I know the MOT is only actually valid at the time it was issued.
I think you can be made to have another MOT done at any time so although the piece of paper says 1 year its not really.
I have heard a lot about VOSA retesting cars after they have been MOTd but thought it was just to scare the testers, never heard of it actually being done.

Not sure the exact regulations, but the MOT guy said he was having a cup of tea before completing my certificate on his system, this was when the VOSA guy walked/ran in apparently. The fact my car wasn't officially completed on his system before the VOSA guy asked to re-do the test might have had something to do with him being able to re-test.

All I know is that VOSA were not happy at him having a cup of tea break before completing my MOT on their computer system. Bit harsh I thought, especially since his garage/office was absolutely freezing.

Regarding the time taken, I agree I wouldn't normally plan anything post MOT just in case stuff needs doing as mentioned. Luckily this time I didn't need the car back that afternoon.

Are you getting rid this year Rohan?

As the MOT tester said to me .. you're getting married? Say bye bye..

I dont plan to but needs may require me to in the near future. Perhaps not this year. I will try to keep hold as long as possible though!

The tester has to log on and "Start" the MOT Test online to VOSA, when it's finished they enter the results and "Finish" the test and the interval is recorded.

Several times with my kit car, which seems to take little time to test compared with a modern car, they've apologised at having to keep me waiting once they've finished because they can't complete the test online as "your MOT's not taken long enough".

That said, what there is to test is tested thoroughly, it's just there's less of it to test and everything's readily accessible!

MOT's are something I like to see done properly and very very thoroughly!!

So the VOSA man would have been concerned at the test being rushed and not done properly and then filling in time before completing it online.

I'm sure the VOSA test is not to test the car again, but conducted as part of a test centre assessment (Training, QC, systems, etc.)
While it may seem semantics I'm sure they want to check the work of the tester before he completes the test and agree with pass or fail. They won't do 2 tests per se. nor would I expect the tester to pass the car then the assessor fail it.

In terms of why the tester would have been told off for having a break is that the test is supposed to take a certain length of time. Too short may miss things. I'd bet the assessor would see a tea break as a way of doing the test quickly but extending the logged time taken.

Incidentally one of the biggest test issue areas on assessment is testing older vehicles. They take longer and require more decisions - from the DVSA:

Vehicle Age (4.1)

Site assessment is all about managing risk. The risk of testing mostly older vehicles is that they are more prone to developing faults, which in turn presents more decisions for your tester, giving a greater chance of a mistake. You can get a good idea of the average age of vehicles tested at your site from your MOT Scheme Performance Report. Clearly you can’t turn older vehicles away, so what do you do about it?

Testers may be less familiar with older vehicles, so rather than observing their test routine as part of the QC check, why not re-examine the vehicles instead? You could also:
