hi guys hope someone can help me, my car went in for a mot today failed on 2 rear springs broke and headlight aim to high which could be put down to the rear springs so i've ordered a set of springs for £152 there was also a advisory of slighty distorted bead rim [4.2.1a] on 3 of the wheels, i have only just had the wheels refurbished 2 months ago so what is meant by this and do i need to go back to the guys that refurbed them and get them to do them again

Unlikely that the rear springs will have caused the headlight adjustment to go out. They crack off the last inch and don't drop the car.

I doubt distortion of the rims is anything to do with refurb, more likely kerb or pothole damage sometime in their life.

i was wondering if it had anything to do with having non run flat tyres which don't bead so tight to the rim as run flat ones the mot was done at main stealers

My rear springs broke out of warranty - took it to the local dealers who contacted BMW and springs repaired FOC! Worth a try.

same here, it was a few months after the Man. Fac. warranty expired but dealer got BMW to repair it FOC :)

i tried for a goodwill gesture on the springs they said as the car is 6 1/2 years old they wouldn't do it, if it had been under 6 they would have bearing in mind that the car was supplied by them and serviced there for the first 3 years then the next service done at main dealer and the next service is due in 2000 miles, you would have thought they would have done it. so guess what when the service is due i shall be going elsewhere i only used them for the mot to see what they were like

springs i wont go into as they are common.

damaged beading will be on the tyre its self and not the rim, you will need to replace the tyres advised.

headlight should be adjusted for free as its a 20 second job when testing alignment, tell them to F.O if they try charge for it. someone else will do it FOC or for a beer.

bulldog - nothing to do with tyres. OP's post references 4.2.1a which is cracks damage or distortion to the wheels. Reason for failure are:

a. a wheel badly damaged, distorted or cracked, or with a badly distorted bead rim

a wheel which has a spoke(s) missing, cracked or excessively
. loose
. bent,or
. corroded

Tyres are covered in section 4.1

I do agree that the headlight should be adjusted FOC, but in fact the MOT tester is forbidden to do it as part of the test, has to fail the car, issue a certificate. Retest and pass it. Even my ultra friendly local guys goes through this ritual.

i stand rightfully corrected by CJ, appologies for my misdirection.

i wonder if the rims have cracked like on the 3/5 series?

No worries - just hate adey to set off in the wrong direction.

If it's an advisory I would start by asking the actual MOT tester to show you exactly what he saw. He may also give an opinion on how it happened and if it's something to be concerend with, but I reckon pothole damage is the most likely. Even if the refurbishers did it while fitting the tyres (unlikley) then they would deny knowlege anyway.

When my spring broke it took a couple of coils off and the drivers side dropped by atleast 15mm.

I thought the headlights auto adjusted on the Z4, i know this is a common fault mot stations try to use to make money for a very quick and easy fix.

They auto adjust to the preset level. If the preset level is wrong, they auto adjust to the wrong level each time.

That said if a spring breaks it's like putting a heavy load int he boot so if they were correct befor they shoudl adjust to correct again, unless it's outside the range of travel.

just changed the springs today [i have put a how to in the how to section] and it has made a difference car is alot smoother over bumps going to get the headlights checked tomorrow and will be surprised if anything is wrong with the headlight aim
