MOT station closure?

My local garage/MoT place has closed today, but the owner has posted his mobile number on the local WhatsApp group and says he'll open for any NHS worker, care worker etc who needs to get their car done, either repairs or MoT test.

Seems fair to me.

A local garage we use in Holmfirth (not for the Z4) is staying open as I believe they can. However they will collect cars and deliver them back to the customer.

Hi Kis, yes very fortunate to have the Z & a daily with no issue with insurance or MOT as a 19 plate

Looks like changing on a daily basis - the Volvo garage said can drop off but can’t wait for it... & management are releasing daily bulletins so it’s down to check on the day 🤗

My usual MOT test centre isn't taking bookings for 3 weeks due to their closure policy. I'm guessing a lot of places will quite rightly be doing the same, but that leaves me with no MOT on the Zed in a couple of weeks just as I was about to un-sorn it :(

We need England/Wales Gov to follow N.Ireland and issue on-line temporary exemption certificates for cars. My guess is they will soon.

Never understand this panic about MOT, it is not making any difference to the road worthiness of a car legally. A 1 year old car can have bald tyres and is not inspected. It is not like a 3 year old car is suddenly likely to be more unroadworthy. Not to mention that the same car only gets inspected every other year in continental Europe, but over here it has to be done every year for some reason.

I see Jembo thanks for clarifying, makes sense!

I know Royal Mail are staying open. So makes sense that other courier/haulage companies stay open too.

pvr it's one of those black and white things? If you have it in date, or not? If some sort of authority were to stop you anyway. It shouldn't be a problem for most on here, as generally they're well looked after (with the exception of one or two Minor surprises occasionally for things missed) but those shouldn't be a Major or Dangerous issues.

Just give it another day or two and they will clarify. Once it becomes apparent people are unable to get cars MOTd' they will have to have a grace period.

After all there are a lot more cars around needing an MOT than HGV/PSV vehicles which they have stopped already.

I enquired yesterday and was offered a slot on Thursday for the ///MR. Fingers crossed it is not cancelled. Though I am happy not to go any where near a MoT centre at the moment if I'm honest.

My mot is cancelled for Saturday, as the garage has shut for 3 weeks. So, I will probably SORN the Zed. Its money in the pot for food for now. I have fuel in my other cars, so maybe asking on how to siphon a Zeds tank in a week or two :o
Its not a life threatening situation and something I can cope with..........

Garages can remain open. I guess it will be up to the individual garage if they choose to stay open or not

Isn't that just petrol stations? My BMW dealer is closing. It did say dealerships in the email I received so imagine includes workshops and MOT stations attached to the dealership, it didn't make it clear to be honest.

Garages and petrol stations were listed separately in the list here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52011915

(Mike Ashley's a w**k btw)

Thanks for link, useful, seems like individual places are still closing regardless. My Hyundai dealer has mailed to say all Holdcroft dealerships are closing today, any MOT and service bookings vehicle collections will be cancelled and the dealerships will be in contact with customers .

No worries. I think it's most likely going to be small indy places that will stay open with larger dealers closing their doors

We are an independent garage and we are allowed to stop open at the moment.

MOT wise,we could still MOT the cars, but we have had 6 cancel today alone.

Its also a bit of a mare sanitizing every car and set of keys we have to touch as well as the money changing hands.

With that in mind,we have called all our customers who have booked in for work and cancelled their bookings. Thankfully everyone without exception understood the situation and wasnt really bothered anyway.

So...3 weeks with feet up and see how it goes, its just too risky at the moment.

So going mobile in a full hazard suit round the country for the captive market here would not rock your boat.

If you just stood at the end of the road, peered over the hedge at the car & left the ticket under a rock I’d keep stoom

Just booked my Z in for it’s MOT on April 19th. Garage said if things change they will let me know.

I'm not worried. All my cars will be over forty years old and so MOT exempt before we are allowed out again anyway. Only eight years to go for my oldest car :P

MOTs have been extended by 6 months
You beat me to it!

On BBC just now...

"Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says MOTs due for renewal from 30 March will be extended for half a year due to the coronavirus outbreak."

Personally I think we ought to have a pandemic more often... it makes a lot of decision making very black & white
