My first MOT is due is a few weeks and I was wondering where people take their Z's to get it done?

Glad you asked this question.... I'm having the same thoughts. Halfords are my closest but I've never used them for an MOT before.

I'm really just trying to find out if I need to take it to a specialist, or if a standard garage is acceptable.

MOT not due for a while yet, but the plan will be to run it down to a local MOT garage. Although if my independent is of a comparable price I'll probably go there. Not expecting any issues though.

I'm hoping the same...although not sure about my longlife stainless steel custom backbox. :?

"The Test Centre" in Deptford. It's an MOT only place, open 7 days a week and you can book online.

Not sure that really fits into any of the categories but they are really good! Been taking my cars there for a few years now. Really friendly and take a genuine interest in any interesting motors you bring them.

Halfords are ok if you have a good one near you. I've got two near me and have to deal with them through work and I wouldn't take my car to either of them.

Best option is to use a garage that you trust the smaller the better I find as you can usually talk to the owner or tester and get a feel for the place.

I used a local garage for 4 or 5 MOTs with no problems (they only charge £29, probably due to local competition).

Then I took my Z4 there last July and it was failed on the O/S/F Anti-roll bar link rubber being split. They said they could fix it for £84 while I waited, so I agreed - but would they really have one of those in stock? Because I never saw a delivery from BMW, ECP or any other parts supplier while I waited!

Took my E46 there last November, and they gave it 2 advisories for rear indicator lights not being orange enough (clear light covers so it uses orange bulbs) and low engine oil level - but it has a warning light for oil level and it hadn't illuminated! Plus I had booked the test as a "while you wait" appointment and it took nearly 2 hours - I won't be going back!

As my Z4 will need a service in June I may just get my BMW indy to sort the MOT at the same time.
