MOT Failure Rates Publushed (MY03 Z4 = 20.6%!)

Really interesting little article i thought id share; shows that VOSA are now publishing details of MOT failures, plus details of why.

Great little help for people looking at reliability of cars! For the Z4; after tyres the 2nd worst parts for failure are under the 'suspension' category which im guessing is usually Bushes! If you compare the ratio of this to a cansumable item (tyres), this is rediculously high!

Article Link (Incluing the worst car list!):

VOSA Pdf of all MOT records (7MB):

Enjoy :)

Good stats

Was looking at mine and complained to missus mine (07 reg) isn't there - then she pointed out 07 reg is still less then 3 years old

Really good find

Tyres are probably as the inner edges go and are difficult to see. Suspension - i'd give odds that was springs as again you can only easily tell on a ramp.

Springs I would think also. Already had one go on my previous car and wouldn't be surprised if my M needs one by next service, especially as the roads I'm driving on are really disgraceful to the payers of road tax :). I can hear a little noise now and again behind me while driving and that's why I think one might be going.

This is the telling section of the article.....

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders stresses that the roadworthiness of vehicles is influenced by how their drivers treat them. A spokesman said:
"Pass rates will be determined by a wide range of factors, but particularly the level of use, ownership profile and the frequency of servicing or regular maintenance."

I can't understand how people can have their car fail due to tyre condition. Here's a simple way to check - you get on you knees and LOOK on a regular basis! :headbang:

People, and my wife springs to mind here, don't look at their cars, they just drive them. Checking tyres, tyre pressures, etc wouldn't occur to them.

+1, some folk just don't have a clue.

Even my wife is guilty. I never drive her car but drove it the 4 miles home from my work on Tuesday. Got home and I noticed the driver's front tyre was soft, checked it with a gauge: only 22psi when there should be 33psi. Got the compressor out then noticed the 2 small bulges in the sidewall - no evidence of damage from kerbing/pothole, I reckon the tyre's just a faulty manufacture (a 4-month old Pirelli P zero, so not a budget one). Christ knows how long it's been like that for without her noticing, bless her

My Z4's MOT is due next month. I should take it 2 weeks earlier, just in case the broken springs will fail the test. The car has done just over 50k miles. If it fails, the springs can be replaced before the expiry date.

Tyres wearing on inside fronts (RFT do this loads, and rear to a lesser extent, hard to spot)

Suspension will be snapped rear springs :)

I saw this and the Z4 does very well all said and done :D

Great find, Ed

Spending far too much time pouring over those numbers.

I had 2 fails on the Z4, I think... spring the first time and then bushes this time, steering was starting to feel off and would have got it sorted. Honest.

But never had any car (or bike) fail for anything obvious! An ex-colleague (12 years or so ago) didn't even know how to fill her car with petrol - she never drove very far and each week her husband would take it to the garage for her :o

TDM... thanks for this have just shown it to my better half to prove that I do get things right sometimes...

As said, most people don't do any, even basic checks on their cars ever. To fail on something so easy to check such as bulbs working or tyres being low isn't really excusable in my mind. People don't take responsibility for anything these days and if their bald tyres caused an accident in the recent slippery conditions you can bet it wouldn't be their fault in their opinion.
Truth is, that once a year MOT or service is the only safety check a majority of cars will ever receive.
